Ahead of Kraven the Hunter’s release this week, a novel report states what we already know: Sony’s animated Spider-Verse is dead

Kraven the Hunter hasn’t released yet, but a novel report makes it clear that Sony is done with its SUMC for now.

SUMC, or the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters, will go down in history for several reasons, including its ridiculous name, movies about characters that no one really pays attention to, and wasting a whole lot of money. Kraven the Hunter is still set to be the latest installment in the Spider-Verse without Spider-Man when it comes out this Friday the 13th (seriously? Did you pick that date?), but a novel report from TheWrap essentially confirms that yes, this will be Sony’s last attempt at creating an interconnected universe of Spider-Man-related characters.

A top talent agent who spoke to TheWrap reportedly said that Sony has “developed what they want to develop for now” and that now it’s “really about the next Spider-Man movie.” That movie will be Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4, a Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film scheduled for release in July 2026 that is, of course, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Sony only helping to produce it. Another Sony insider told TheWrap that in addition to Spider-Man 4, the company will also continue to work on Beyond the Spider-Verse, an upcoming animated sequel that doesn’t have a release date yet, and Spider-Man Noir, Amazon’s live-action series , starring Nicolas Cage in the title role.

What you’ll notice, of course, is that there’s a renewed focus on Spider-Man, you know, a character that people actually like, rather than his villains or side characters that people barely know. But after that? Who knows! But I’m sure that won’t be the case with Morbius.
