Stalker 2 previews are now available, as are a selection of developer interviews on GSC World (our own interview, by the way, will be released today, October 17)! In one such interview run by Windows Centralthe developers chimed in on the Xbox Series S and how working on it convinced them that any game could reach the console’s memory limits.
“At first, we thought it might be impossible to port Stalker 2 to Xbox Series S. We have such a huge game with so many mechanics and so many things. We thought it must be impossible. But then we start optimizing by adding novel features for streaming information. Unreal Engine has a lot of features for this, but for our game we really needed to squeeze every megabyte out of every piece of system content we could, and now we did.

“After this experience, I believe that every game can reach the memory limits of Xbox Series S. And yes, not every developer, every studio has the ability or additional time to optimize for Xbox Series S. We had to augment our optimization knowledge, which also helped in building a computer, making it much more competent. We have quite low minimum computer requirements for a contemporary game.
“We stick to 30 FPS on Xbox Series S. However, in many cases we managed to achieve 60 FPS, but it is not as consistent as in Series X. But we want to get a performance mode for Xbox Series S to achieve 60 FPS, we think it is possible.”
The topic of the Xbox Series S has proven to be a hard topic of discussion among some game developers, with the obvious limitations of the hardware proving discouraging. For example, Dune Awakening’s production director told us at Gamescom that creating a Series S version “will be a challenge.” This positive attitude is certainly refreshing. Even if it doesn’t run at 60 FPS, a cheaper console with Stalker will be a boon for many.
