How to Defeat the Wandering Wight in Black Myth: Wukong
The Wandering Phantom will literally send you back to the temple if you don’t learn its attacks, so let’s start with that:
- Shift and shuffle combo:The Wandering Wight’s main move involves lowering itself and moving towards you with its hands. This ability has a surprisingly wide range and revolves around the Wandering Wight. The best move here is to either retreat or try to dodge behind the boss.
- Earthquake attack on palm tree: One of Wandering Wight’s most perilous moves is the earthquake, which comes in two variations, both of which have the same animation. To start this move, Wandering Wight slams his hand into the ground, creating an eruption around the impact point. Sometimes the attack ends there. But sometimes Wandering Wight will continue to push his hand into the ground, creating an earthquake that radiates out from the central spot three or four times, getting bigger each time. This attack can cover a huge area, so it’s best to run as far away from Wandering Wight as possible as soon as you see his hand coming down. If you’re confident in your dodging skills, you can dodge each shockwave to deal extra damage to the boss.
- Trampling Combination: Wandering Wight also likes to stomp. Luckily, the spin-up here is very long, and the boss raises his foot high before he starts. When you see this, move away from the boss, because he has a enormous area and deals a lot of damage. Be careful not to attack too quickly, because sometimes he will follow up with more stomps or even a headbutt.
- Stomp Jump: One of Wandering Wight’s more mobile moves, the jumping stomp lets him leap into the air and try to crush you. While he moves quite quickly here — and can leap across the arena in a single bound — you can tell an attack is coming when his feet completely leave the ground.
- Manual explosion: Wandering Wight’s hand explosion is his most devastating move, as it is quick and can deal massive damage. Watch out for Wandering Wight to retract his hand and then thrust it forward. He will fire a powerful line of energy at you, which you can avoid by moving to the side or rolling through it at the right time.
- Running clapping: Another mobile move, Wandering Wight will sometimes bend down and put his arms to the side. This is a signal that he is going to attack and applaud you. Either run away from the boss immediately or wait until he gets close and dodge. He has a variant of this move where he will run towards you, swinging his arms wildly and then slam the ground, but the strategy to fight him is the same.
- Headbutt: Wandering Wight will sometimes headbutt the ground and you if you get in his way. This is one of the boss’s faster moves and you’ll only have a few seconds to react. Watch out for him to tilt his head back slightly; when you see this, back away immediately.
The key to this fight is to not get hit, which sounds like obvious advice, but it’s crucial to remember because Wandering Wight can deal damage in a single attack – enough to need two Gourd chugs to recover. If you’re not confident, avoid attacks rather than try to avoid them.
Immobilize and Red tides Transformation is your main tool in this fight at this stage of the game. Transform with Red Tides as early as possible – although it’s unlikely you’ll get it back unless you really extend the fight. Build up your meter as you transform and operate your weighty attack to set the Wandering Phantom on firewhich will do a lot of damage over time. Immobilize is great because it lets you do a lot of damage while staying protected, but it will also stun the boss if you hit it challenging enough to break the stun (operate a weighty attack with Focus for this).
To win this fight you must stun the boss or knock him off balance. Use forceful, focused strikes try to throw him off balance whenever possible. If you’re lucky, you can also lure him into throwing himself at one of the stone pillars in the area, briefly stunning him. This is a great benefit, but not worth counting on, as he can easily destroy these pillars with his earthquake attack.
The trick to this fight—and this is something you’ll just learn as you fight him—is to learn when you can get in a few punches and when you need to back off. As you learn the fight, stay close enough to him that he’s not constantly attacking you, but far enough away that you can avoid his other attacks—there’s a middle ground you need to feel to stay protected.
When you defeat the Wandering Specter, it will drop Cat Eye Beads Curiosome craft materials and The Wandering Spirit of Wight. Once you’re able to absorb Spirits (don’t worry, you’ll be able to collect any missed Spirits from any shrine once you get the ability later in Chapter 1), you’ll be able to briefly transform into the Wandering Wight to deal an impressive headbutt. You’ll also get a huge defense boost when you have his spirit equipped, which can really facilitate you get through the first three chapters of the game.
