To hell with you, NYT. Putting WIND in a puzzle with BLOW, DRAFT, GUST, and PUFF guarantees problems for anyone foolish enough to fall into your trap – and that’s exactly what I did. To hell with you!

Worse, this yellow group was the easiest of the four today, although it cost me two mistakes. I had already made the connection between Dr. Seuss and purple, POP (in socks), CAT (in hat), and GRINCH, but I couldn’t figure out the last one. So I left it and focused on the others, and after my brief attempt at getting the wind-related answers wrong, I managed to solve the yellow and green.

Five answers remained: BULL, LION, TURTLE, CRAB, and RAM. One went with Dr. Seuss, the other four formed the blue group. I considered ages, then spotted the zodiac group and could play TURTLE to default to purple. And in case you were wondering, that was Yertle, the turtle…

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It requires you to find groups of four items that have something in common, with each group having a different level of difficulty: green is basic, yellow is a little harder, blue is often quite strenuous, and purple is usually very strenuous.

The positive is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one, since you’ll be able to answer it by elimination. What’s more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a bit of breathing room.

It’s a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to surprise you with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can hide answers.

You can play it for free via NYT Games Page on your desktop computer or mobile device.
