Hollow Knight: Silksong Will NOT Appear at Opening Night Live, Confirms Geoff Keighley

Published:

The annual Opening Night Live show will feature a long list of games, but one particularly popular sequel will not be on the list: Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Anticipation surrounding Silksong is so high that the people hosting the live streams filled with game announcements, feature reveals, and trailers have had to manage expectations by saying the Team Cherry game isn’t coming.

In recent years, chats on shows like ONL have been flooded with requests for Hollow Knight: Silksong, perhaps to the detriment of the games that ultimately did appear. So it makes sense that Geoff Keighley, who hosts ONL as well as the annual Game Awards show, would tweet to confirm Hollow Knight: Silksong’s absence. “Just to get this over with, there will be no Silksong on ONL on Tuesday,” Keighley said. “Team Cherry Games is still cooking.”

Hollow Knight fans were already gripped by an all-too-familiar sense of dismay after the 2024 E3-style summer video game show came and went without any news of Silksong. Fans admitted to being concerned about the game, which hasn’t received any official updates in over a year, after developer Team Cherry delayed its release to early 2023.

Silksong was announced on February 14, 2019. as an expansion to Hollow Knight that became a full sequel focused on Hornet from the original game. “Almost from the beginning, Hornet’s adventure was meant to take place in a new land, but as we got deeper into it, it quickly became too big and too unique to remain a DLC as originally planned” The Cherry team said at the time that“We know it adds a bit to the wait, but we think the final, fresh world you’ll get to explore will be worth it.”

Hollow Knight: Silksong still doesn’t have a release date, even though over five years have passed since its announcement.

The developer then went hushed for two years, only resurfacing in 2021 to announce would have nothing to say about Silksong at E3 this yearAnother year has passed and Silksong has finally made its presence known as Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022 revealed that the game would be coming to Microsoft’s console and Game Pass on day one. Further hopes were inspired when Xbox said everything shown at the event will be released within the year. Of course that didn’t happen.

The last time Team Cherry released an update on Silksong was in February of this year, when the studio’s PR and marketing head Matthew “Leth” Griffin posted a brief comment stating that they were “still hard at work on the game.”

No Hollow Knight: Silksong at Opening Night Live. But what WILL be at the concert? Keighley confirmed ONL performances on Tuesday include:

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
  • Monster Hunter Wilds
  • Indiana Jones and the Big Wheel
  • Little Nightmares 3
  • DRAGON BALL: Spark! ZERO
  • Batman: Arkham Shadow
  • Awakening of the dune
  • Marvel’s Rivals
  • Squid: Unleashed Game
  • New game from Tarsier Studios
  • CIVILIZATION by Sid Meier 7
  • Kingdom Comes Liberation 2
  • Lost Records: Bloom & Rage

According to Keighley, ONL will last two hours and “will also feature a lot of new game announcements, surprises, and special guests.” ONL will begin at 11:00 AM PST/2:00 PM EST/8:00 PM CST on Tuesday, August 20.
