Fallout New Vegas DLC-sized mod development Fallout in New Mexico is no longer on hold, with a team member telling VG247 that the project is currently “in good shape” as work on the mod has resumed.
Fallout: Nuevo Mexico has been in the works since 2021, promising a Fallout adventure set in and around New Mexico, just five years after the events of Interplay’s original Fallout game, with plenty of classic Fallout mechanics and vibes. The mod went on hiatus earlier this year after “disappearing” in April, with its social media and YouTube presence largely set to private. Its creators now say the project is back on the road, but they’re not promising a release date.

After Nuevo Mexico PR chief JK-Serling posted a brief update on the moderator’s Discord server on July 10 stating that “the project is no longer on hold,” and on August 8, she posted a photo of a Vault-Tec-branded box washed ashore (with the caption “a saucer full of secrets”), we reached out to them for more information.
“Zapshock is back to work on Nuevo Mexico, and the project is in good shape,” the modder stated. “Even before it was put on hold, it was in good shape.” They also confirmed that the image of the box on the beach is meant to be a teaser, saying it’s meant to “show people in a subtle, impactful way that we’re working on something,” but adding that it’s “not about advertising anything.”
“Something is coming, but we can only ask people to be patient, let the developers cook,” the modder continued. “We don’t want to keep saying “something is coming” and have nothing to show, we’ve noticed that we are humans who have our limits, we need sleep, and burnout is a real thing.
JK-Serling explained that having to order and purchase fresh assets not included in the base game “kept us from revealing anything.
“We promised that this year we would show something and reveal things that we haven’t shown in years. Big reveals that were the main reason we did it, but we only get one chance to show something and we want it to be what we all mean.”
VG247 also reached out to several voice actors who had been selected to work with the mod team (or had begun doing so before the project went on hiatus). One of them, who goes by the name Ally Katz, told us that they reached out to Zapshock to wish the modder well after the Discord server downtime was confirmed, and received a response in early July that the mod team was counting on them to record a few more voice lines at some point.
Another user, who goes by the name Strigoi, stated that he was waiting for word from the team regarding several voice issues before the project was paused. He added that he has not contacted them himself, nor has the moderation team contacted him since the project was paused.
“It’s mostly been waiting for news and finding out about things that have already happened,” they said of that last period. “I’m not really pressed about it though, I figured they’d tug on my sleeve when it came time to record. I know enough about the creative process to know that it’s usually closer to completion.”
So that’s where this ambitious Fallout modding project lies, and it’ll be captivating to see what comes of it, especially for those who were impressed with what they saw in Nuevo Mexico before the hiatus. For now, being patient and letting the modders continue until they’re ready to show more of what they’ve created seems to be the way to go.
