Dressed in full makeup, enormous hoop earrings and a loose sweatshirt, former YouTuber turned pop star Madison Beer exudes a natural glow as she chats with viewers of her Twitch stream.
“You changed my life. You changed my whole world. And… I mean Dress to impress.”
Beer has become a star for a new generation of fans. She started out covering songs on YouTube in the 2010s and has now become an icon for a younger generation. Beloved on TikTok, her fans flock to her concert fancams, and her official profile has over 20.3 million followers. She has distinguished herself as a Grammy-nominated artist who is old enough to embark on a world-famous tour. She does all of this, but she also occasionally streams on Twitch, where her fans told her about a dress-up game on Roblox called Dress to impress.
Dress to impress is a trendy new game released on Roblox. In it, people compete against others online to create the best outfit based on a specific theme. In the game, players walk through elegant dressing rooms, trying on clothes, makeup, and accessories. At the end of a set time, everyone shows off their work in a fashion show, where people vote on the best outfits. Thanks to streamers playing the game, such as Case “CaseOh” Baker and Kai Cenat, the game became a breakout hit and introduced quite a few new players to Roblox.
While some streamers may play it ironically, the game has given many people online — including Beer — a chance to recapture their interest in dress-up games in an authentic way. Much like Barbie the film allowed viewers to love pink and its hyper-feminine aesthetic without any embarrassment, Dress to impress allows people to freely express their love of playing dress-up, which could otherwise be considered a girl’s game.
In the comments section viral TikTok while recording Beer’s clip, a person confirmed her message.
I personally am glad that Beer is talking about her experiences. And not just because people identify with her. Games like Fashion designer Barbie have been a huge commercial success, but they don’t always get the recognition they deserve for their influence on video games more broadly. We don’t always get to celebrate dress-up games, so it’s nice to see a popular character doing it for Dress to impress.
