You play as a demon on a mission to swallow the moons of Hell, and you accomplish this by skateboarding through a series of open spaces, taking in the graphic splendor and performing tricks. It’s one of those visual and auditory experiences that you just have to play for yourself, and you might kickflip along the way. What’s not to love?

Roguelites are common in the indie scene these days, but this list proves that there are still modern, enticing versions of the concept worth playing. Absolum is one of them, a side-scrolling fighting game with fierce, excellent combat and satisfying loops that will make your next playthrough worth it. With a robust soundtrack and striking graphics, Absolum will keep you hooked from start to finish.

Arguably one of the most addictive PS5 games released this year, Ball X Pit combines Vampire Survivors and Breakout to truly impressive effect. You blow up legions of enemies, then manage and build a city, all in a roguelite setting. The game is tiny enough that you’re always tempted to start another one, and the upgrades are addictive. Ball X Pit may seem inconspicuous, but if you dig a little deeper you’ll find one of the most addictive games on PS5.

With expectations so high, things could have gone terribly wrong for Team Cherry and its sequel Hollow Knight.
Fortunately, after more than seven years of work on Hollow Knight: Silksong, it worked. The colossal Metroidvania is an incredible achievement with satisfying gameplay, intriguing exploration, and exceptionally brutal boss and enemy gauntlet fights. This is not a game for the casual player, but those who are up to the challenge will be rewarded with one of the most rewarding experiences in the entire game. Hollow Knight: Silksong is the indie scene at its peak.
