There are many years left until the release of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic

Cast your mind back to the days of PlayStation 3 and Xbox One and there was a huge uproar when it was discovered that some companies were creating CG rendered trailers of what was supposed to be gameplay, and the game usually looked nothing like the renders. Nowadays, every game is announced with a CG trailer, which means you don’t have to finish the game or, in the case of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, maybe not even code a single line.

It turns out that the up-to-date studio developing this game was only founded this year, and considering that AAA games currently take at least four or five years to develop, you probably won’t see Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic until the next decade. This means that if it ever gets made, Star Wars titles announced at events will have a solid path to disappearing into development hell.

Star Wars: 1313 was announced at E3 2012 and canceled a year later. Star Wars: Eclipse was announced by Quantic Dream in 2021 and since then we haven’t seen a single thing about the game. Then we have Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake, which was revealed during the PlayStation Showcase in 2021, with the title being developed by Aspyr. It appears that there have been problems with the studio since then, and rumors suggest that the entire game has been abandoned and that the matter is now being handled by Mad Head Games.

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was announced last night at The Game Awards 2025.

“Being set in the past gives us tremendous space to tell new, original Star Wars stories while remaining true to the spirit of the galaxy we all love. There are literally endless stories to tell. While we will always honor and celebrate the core of the saga, it is critical to explore new territories, meet new characters and see new parts of the galaxy,” said Lucasfilm Games Vice President and General Manager Douglas Reilly.
