The answers to today’s Connections game, #909, are…

  • YELLOW: NORMAL AVERAGE, AVERAGE, PAR, STANDARD
  • GREEN: MOCATE COOL, MODERATE, SET, TEMPERATURE
  • BLUE: MEMBER OF THE TITLE GROUP IN AN ANIMATION FRANCHISE CAR, AMAZING, MINION, MONSTER
  • PURPLE: START WITH HERPETOFAUNA ADDERALL, MONITORING, NEWTON, TOADY

  • My rating: Easy
  • My result: Perfect

I’ll be straightforward, I didn’t think about the words STARTING WITH HERPETOFAUNA when I was putting together ADDERALL, MONITORSHIP, NEWTON and TOADY. But I thought they all had different kinds of animals to begin with.

But that’s one of the things I love about Connections – how it can simultaneously make you feel stupid and send you down a Google knowledge rabbit hole.

That said, I was disappointed that I didn’t get the blue group from the beginning, especially after watching the three Pixar films on the list dozens of times.

  • PURPLE: ____Conversation BABY, PILLOW, SMALL, SWEET

What are NYT calls?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is straightforward, yellow is slightly more arduous, blue is often quite arduous, and purple is usually very arduous.

The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.

However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can hidden answers.

You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
