IO Interactive is busy working on the James Bond 007 video game First Light, but says it also plans to release Hitman 4.
In an interview with DiversityCEO Hakan Abrak said “of course there will be more Hitman.” But it might be a while before Hitman 4 comes out. Abrak said any talk about a Hitman 4 announcement will have to wait until Hitman arrives in co-op in World of Assassination, which continues to enjoy DLC support from the studio.
“So of course there will be more Hitman,” Abrak said. “But now I think we need to move on to the other side this year, and next year you’ll get more news about co-op in Hitman, because I think co-op is a really, really good expansion of the universe and will bring some very interesting mechanics and combos to World of Assassination. But then we’ll talk about the next Hitman – because, of course, there will be another Hitman.”
The Hitman series began in 2000 with the release of Hitman: Codename 47. Hitman 2: Silent Assassin was released in 2002. Hitman: Blood Money was released in 2006 and was the third game in the original Hitman trilogy. Hitman: Absolution was released in 2012, and Hitman, which was the first part of the World of Assassination trilogy, was released in 2016. Hitman 2 came out in 2018, followed by Hitman 3 in 2021.
IOI currently has three major productions in development: Hitman: World of Assassination, 007 First Light, and a recent fantasy IP appropriately code-named Project Fantasy are in development. “There’s no announcement yet on what exactly it will be, but it’s a multiplayer fantasy project that’s incredibly ambitious and really cool and is something other than a gun in a suit,” Abrak teased. “So it’s good to have something new here in terms of creative perspectives.”
Will Hitman 4 have to wait until all three projects are completed? Abrak didn’t say, but you can see why the studio would want to return to the series with a brand recent sequel: in total, Hitman has over 85 million players and over 25 million copies sold. Moreover, over a million people play Hitman, Abrak added.
As for 007 First Light, its release is scheduled for March 27, 2026 (the release date seems even more lucrative since GTA 6 has been pushed to November). In the shorter term, the newest Elusive Target to appear in Hitman World of Assassination is rap star Eminem, who recruits Agent 47 to take down his unsafe alter ego Slim Shady. The mission is now available for free on all platforms.
