In Destiny 2’s darkest moment, Bungie is banking on Star Wars to bring players back

It’s no secret that Destiny 2 is going through some really complex times.

Chaos in the company’s management, a shrinking player base and bad decisions led Sony to step in and begin to strengthen its influence over the $3 billion developer.

The Japanese giant recently noted during a financial call that the studio would not meet expectations, resulting in an “impairment charge.”

However, Bungie hopes that the fresh Destiny 2 Renegades expansion, which will be released on December 2, will change the fortunes of players.

It’s an extraordinary beast: it is inspired by Star Wars, but that’s not the case directly part of the Lucasfilm series. In essence, the developer is creating a fresh story I feel as if it comes from a galaxy far, far away, but it also has its own identity.

Honestly, while we know how effortless it is to complain about Bungie, we really like some of the aesthetics. The above behind-the-scenes documentary showcases some great visuals, and we think the developers managed to capture the Star Wars feel without sacrificing everything that makes Destiny 2 unique.

Will it have the required impact? Well, at least for PS Storepre-orders for the expansion are quite immense, second only to Resident Evil Requiem, Reanimal, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and 007 First Light. It’s not bad.

Time will tell if this will be enough to resurrect the fate of the beleaguered studio.
