Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 System Update 21.0.1 Available – Here are the patch notes

Published:

Nintendo has released a recent system software update for the Switch and Switch 2, updating both consoles’ firmware to version 21.0.1.

The latest patch comes just two weeks after Nintendo’s last major console software update, which was also widely criticized for appearing to disrupt compatibility with a range of third-party Switch 2 docks. Nintendo, for its part, said in a follow-up statement to IGN that it has “no intention to impede or invalidate the legal compatibility of third-party docks.”

Today’s update is just rolling out, and there are plenty of third-party docking options available to test. However, as of yet, there has been no direct suggestion from fans that this update has made any further changes to third-party dock compatibility – for better or for worse. Still, we’ll keep an eye out and update if we see anything noteworthy.

In terms of the update’s content, Nintendo said it has fixed a bug with the system transfer feature on Switch that previously affected users’ ability to seamlessly transition to Switch 2. There is also a fix for a common Bluetooth issue that previously prevented wireless devices like controllers and headsets from connecting.

Nintendo’s full patch notes for the update are below:

Earlier this month, Nintendo revealed that the Switch 2 sold an astonishing 10.36 million units between June 5 and September 30, a record number that doubles the launch sales of the original Switch, meaning the recent platform will continue to act as the biggest console launch ever.

Mario Kart World, the Switch 2’s flagship launch game, has now sold 9.57 million copies, and Donkey Kong Bananza has recorded 3.49 million copies since July. Meanwhile, Pokémon Legends ZA sold 5.8 million copies in its first week alone.

The next Switch 2 announcement is the upcoming release of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, a game some fans have been waiting for for a decade. Recent Metroid Prime 4 announcements have criticized the game’s first talkative NPC, but will the full experience leave a more positive impression? We don’t have to wait long to find out, as the game will be released on December 4.
