How to play Connections

Connections is one of the most popular (and challenging) daily puzzle games published by the New York Times (owner of Wordle). The goal of Connections is to group the 16 words of the day into four groups, with each group of four words having a common theme.

For example, the words “Hook”, “Nana”, “Peter”, and “Wendy” are all Peter Pan characters. Let’s take another example: “Action”, “Ballpark”, “Go” and “Stick” are words that usually appear right before the word “Figure”.

Your task is to guess what themes connect different words – but be careful, because in most cases there are misleading connections that are only intended to confuse you! To win the game you must find all four connections without making 4 mistakes. On the fourth mistake, the game ends and the answer is revealed automatically.

Each of the four groups in the daily Connection puzzle is also assigned a different color to represent how basic or complex it is to find the Connection. These colors are: yellow (easiest), green (basic), blue (medium), and purple (hardest).

What’s today’s answer on Connections?

Here is the answer to today’s Connections puzzle on Tuesday, October 28:

  • Yellow: Banality (chestnut, platitude, cliché, trope)
  • Green: Know (aware, fashionable, clever, wise)
  • Blue: Remote buttons (Back, Home, Menu, Select)
  • Purple: One-Named Singer Plus entry letter (Gusher, Kenia, Ocher, Pelvis)

Let’s hope the complex yellow themes don’t become a recurring trope of Connections… I was on the right track when it came to “clichés, tropes and clichés”, but I didn’t understand the word “chestnut”. Apparently you can exploit this word to describe an senior joke or story that has been told over and over again.

Matching the words of wisdom wasn’t too complex, but at first I had doubts about the word “hip” because it seemed more related to fashion than general knowledge… But then I realized that having knowledge about fashion, being “fashion-savvy” actually means being hip, so it all worked out.

By the time I subtracted P from the pelvis, I had already solved green and blue, so it wasn’t difficult to find the remaining singers who only had a few words left. I finally managed to match “chestnut” to the other yellow words.

Congratulations if you answered today’s Connections question correctly, with or without the support of our helpful tips above! And if you didn’t succeed today, don’t worry – a modern Connections puzzle is released every day at midnight, so you can try again tomorrow, just like with Wordle!
