Battlefield 6 burst onto the FPS scene, revitalizing the Electronic Arts brand with a return to classic elements and a ponderous dose of universal destruction. But the premiere on October 10 was just the beginning. Developer Battlefield Studios will release more free content for the game starting with the first season, which begins on October 28 and runs until November 11.
Seasons in Battlefield 6 are divided into three timed thematic updates. The first part of Season 1 is Rogue Ops, giving players a novel map, mode and weapon to try out. I hit the ground running with the novel Rogue Ops content, exploring the novel Blackwell Fields map and Strikepoint gameplay mode. I also need to try out the map and mode coming on November 18 in the second update, California Resistance.
Here are all the practical details about upcoming Rogue Ops events, as well as a few glimpses into the California Resistance.
New maps
Blackwell Fields – In Rogue Ops, Blackwell Fields is a huge oil field in the California Chaparral. The All-Out Warfare map takes place in a desert landscape that easily catches fire as helicopters, planes, and tanks battle across a extensive area. Blackwell Fields provides a lot of open space with rolling hills and low bush that is perfect for snipers to set up camp. Vehicles also have plenty of room to maneuver on their way to different destinations. But with oil wells, construction equipment and shipping containers scattered throughout the landscape, infantry have plenty of places to dig in and engage in intense fighting.
Eastwood — While Pax Armata attacks novel targets, NATO soldiers battle cells in the suburbs of Los Angeles in the California Resistance update. Eastwood is one of those Southern California towns where fighting takes place in the streets and in the homes. Eastwood’s suburban landscape offers plenty of intense combat environments, with battles taking place in and out of living rooms, in drained swimming pools and backyards, while tanks destroy luxury homes. The wide open golf course means you have to be careful not to be spotted by enemy troops as you move, but there’s still a lot of variety on this map.
Get to…the golf cart! – A very chilly aspect of Eastwood is that it’s littered with ride-on golf carts that are great for an impromptu escape or a trip to a novel destination. You can also try to ram them into enemy vehicles, provided you remember to jump out at the right time.
New modes
Point of impact – Rogue Ops also gets a novel 4v4 multiplayer mode where two teams fight each other in close quarters, fighting for a single objective. Players only have one life per round in Strikepoint, so it’s critical to play carefully, stick to teammates, and watch out for ambushes. A round victory is achieved when a team completes an objective or eliminates the other team, and the match is won by the first team to win six rounds. Strikepoint is a challenging mode that die-hard gamers will surely love, where tactical awareness, good strategies and clear communication are imperative to victory.
Sabotage – California Resistance’s 8v8 mode, Sabotage gives you one of two goals: destroy equipment crates scattered across a diminutive map up close, or prevent the opposing team from doing so. Teams switch between offense and defense, and the team that destroys the most equipment wins the match. The trick in this mode is to destroy caches as quickly and efficiently as possible, using your entire arsenal to get the job done while defending yourself from enemy fighters. Explosives are at a premium for attackers, while defenders must position themselves wisely to engage opponents who are constantly streaming into the battle zone. Sabotage is a confused, action-packed mode that may be a bit more cordial to casual players who want to constantly rush into the action with little downtime. It’s full of players who are constantly fighting and respawning quickly.
New weapon
In addition to novel modes and maps, three updates in Season 1 introduce novel weapons to the fight. I tried out each of the three guns that will be available in Rogue Ops, as well as its novel vehicle. You can get them all with free Battlefield 6 Battle Pass tiers, and with four different paths to using the Battle Pass, you’ll be able to choose which rewards you want to prioritize. Complete all four paths and you will unlock a fifth free path to complete.
You can also purchase Battlefield Pro, which provides additional rewards and cosmetics as part of the Battle Pass.
SOR-300C – Carbine – This carbine is designed for close quarters engagements and is very deadly when you are close to the enemy. It has a slower fire rate than other rifles, but deals more damage, making it great for tight spaces and smaller maps. At shorter ranges it can be effective for both hip-firing and aiming down sights, and at mid-range it’s quite solid if you fire in bursts to manage the recoil.
Mini Fix – Sniper Rifle – Good news for Recon players: Rogue Ops brings a novel, faster sniper rifle option. Other snipers currently in the game force you to lower your rifle to take another shot each time unless you equip the attachment, which makes them quite leisurely. But the Mini Fix can fire through its entire 10-round magazine much faster than its counterparts without interfering with aiming. As a result, it doesn’t hit as rigid as some other rifles, but the ability to continuously fire at a target can compensate for this.
GGH-22 – sidearm — The novel Glock 22 sidearm is a solid middle-of-the-road choice that seems quite deadly at close range, even when firing from the hip. It provides a balanced position among other sidearms, with a few more shots and doing slightly more damage than some, but a slower fire rate than others. It may not replace the sidearm you’re already comfortable with, but it’s a solid option in an emergency situation.
Traverser Mk. 2 – armored vehicle — A novel armored personnel carrier is hitting the battlefield in Rogue Ops, and it’s perfect for capturing targets. The APC is a support vehicle for infantry fighters. It can move troops around maps and comes with mounted weapons, while also offering extras such as an integrated first aid kit to heal players and an emergency repair station to keep the APC in the fight.
New attachments – Rogue Ops also introduces several novel modifications that you can add to your weapons. Rail covers for some rifles and lightweight machine guns enhance draw speed, while low-power variable optic scopes add several novel magnification options for LMGs and rifles.
