Borderlands 4 looks set to be a huge hit, at least in the US, where it has surpassed Borderlands 3 in terms of money made.
US video game data firm Circana said Gearbox’s looter shooter was the best-selling premium video game of September, debuting as the third best-selling game of 2025. It was a September bestseller on both Xbox and the PC store aggregate charts.
Most importantly for publisher 2K Games, Borderlands 4 generated the highest launch month dollar sales of any title in the series’ history, almost 30% higher than previous best Borderlands 3.
It’s worth noting that this statistic doesn’t look at unit sales, but rather at revenue generated. Borderlands 4 launched at $69.99 (eventually, after some strange online confusion about whether the price would go up to $80), the Deluxe Edition was priced at $99.99 and the Super Deluxe Edition was priced at $129.99. At launch in September 2019, Borderlands 3 cost $59.99 for the Standard Edition, $79.99 for the Deluxe Edition, and $99.99 for the Super Deluxe Edition. It’s also worth noting that Borderlands 3 was a PC exclusive on the Epic Games Store for six months after launch, while Borderlands 4 was released on PC via Steam and consoles.
So we don’t have specific sales figures yet (2K Games hasn’t made any announcement yet). But according to Circana, Borderlands 4 was the first Borderlands title to be released as the best-selling game in its launch month, so it’s true.

When Borderlands 4 released last month, there were encouraging signs. This set the peak concurrent player record for the entire series on Steam (neither Sony nor Microsoft publicly releases player numbers). However, it suffered from performance issues that contributed to Valve’s “mixed” Steam review rating. Gearbox has released a series of patches since launch, but fans are waiting for Borderlands 4’s “Day 30” update, which will be released later this week.
Incidentally, NBA 2K26 is the best-selling game of 2025 year-to-date, overtaking Capcom’s Monster Hunter: Wilds. Helldivers 2 was September’s fourth best-selling game on Xbox platforms, after debuting in third place in its August launch month. Helldivers 2 took sixth place among the best-selling games in September, and as of the beginning of 2025 it was in 19th place.
