The Outlast Trials has a up-to-date game mode, added in today’s Invasion update. This up-to-date constant game mode brings PvP to multiplayer horror for the first time, arriving alongside the return of the Geister Program’s limited-time Halloween costume catalog.
Invasion mode allows players to play as reagents or attack games as an impostor. Only a constrained group of imposters can attack a given attempt by posing as a knife-wielding maniac, but those who wait will be their teammate’s eyes and ears until it’s their turn. While observing, they can ping targets and lend a hand strategize by informing energetic cheaters. These Tricksters will appear armed with a knife, of either the Slash or Thrust variety, with the former dealing damage and the latter needing to charge up for an instant kill.
The cheater has a constrained time to defeat the target and is forced to return to the nearest insertion gate or be electrocuted for being rude, rude players. They can also be punished by death, which incurs a time penalty for their next spawn. They have several key advantages, they are able to see the noise made by Reagents, and are also immune to psychotic gas and Prime Asset effects, although they will not be able to pick up items.
At the end of the match, the Impostor will be rated on how he deals damage, kills Reagents, and survives his turn.
This is quite an fascinating variation on the typical asymmetric horror multiplayer game.
