The answers for today’s Connections game, #860, are…

  • YELLOW: MOVING BREEZE, COAST, SWIM, RIDE
  • GREEN: WORDS BEFORE THE “BALL” IN SPORT DODGE, HAND, PICKLES, ROCKET
  • BLUE: PROlific ACTORS BANK, CHEST, CRUISE, FORD
  • PURPLE: HOMOPHONES SYNONYMS FOR “VEND” CELL, STACK, PEDAL, TRAY

  • My rating: Hard
  • My result: Perfect

Each of these groups was a cheerful solution for me, starting with PROLIFIC ACTORS.

At first I thought BACON might have something to do with food or pork products, but combined with CRUISE I guessed the connection was acting.

Incidentally, I’m sure there will be those who will agree that while other stars are prolific, Tom CRUISE made far fewer films than he might have – most years we only get one chance to see him escape an explosion – so is he really one of this quartet?

Slip I got it, really because I just thought the words looked good together and WORDS BEFORE “BALL” IN SPORTS because I thought the combination was tricky. The thing is, whether you know it or you counterfeit it, the result is still the same.

Yesterday’s NYT Connections Answers (Friday, October 17, Game #859)

  • GREEN: ITEMS IN THE GIFT SHOP FIGURE, KEY RING, MAGNET, POSTCARD
  • BLUE: FOLCTAL CHARACTERS CHICKEN LITTLE, JACK, CALINICA, TOM THUMB
  • PURPLE: WEATHER CONDITIONS BEAUFORT SCALE, DEW POINT, HEAT INDEX, WIND COOL

What are NYT calls?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is straightforward, yellow is slightly more tough, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very tough.

The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.

However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can concealed answers.

You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
