Have you ever thought that Rubik’s Cube needs some sparkle on a 21st century iPad? Me neither, and yet the $299 WowCube is officially available for pre-order now.
Rubik’s WowCube is equipped with 24 LCD screens and an artificial intelligence-based application that tracks the time spent playing with it and the number of twists completed. The official website claims the WowCube is “the most advanced toy you can give,” claims it’s “10 times better” than a standard Rubik’s Cube – which is to be expected considering it’s 20 times more costly.
In addition, the site offers the WowClub Pass, which includes the Mindhub AI app, a monthly game catalog, additional dice widgets, an app builder, and member discounts on future dice. It looks like Rubik is barely sending a battle pass with this up-to-date electronic device.
This isn’t the first WowCube to exist. Cubios (the company behind it) previously announced WowCube at the same price, but this is the result of a partnership with Spin Master, which paid $50 million for the Rubik’s Cube brand in early 2021. It looks like the basic idea of the cube is the same (hitting 24 screens on a Rubik’s cube).
I paid $200 Panic Datea little yellow device that lets you play games with a crank, and yet I don’t quite see the appeal of the WowCube. With only four grids per side, it has a total of 24 grids, which is 30 fewer than the standard Rubik’s Cube. This means that if you want to solve a customary Rubik’s Cube, WowCube will be much less complicated (and will cost 20 times more).
WowCube doesn’t seem to be designed to appeal to those who like Rubik’s Cubes, because those who like Rubik’s Cubes are probably looking for a real challenge. It supports games like Cut the Rope, 2048, crossword and several others. This is clearly a group of games I played on my iPod over a decade ago, and not something I would pay that much money for now. Hopefully something more original will come along on the software side.
The website boasts the ability to charge all day (from a 3600 mAh battery), built-in microphones, eight speakers and claims that WowCube is “not a console” but “a completely new thing.” It comes with eight processors, eight gyroscopes and eight accelerometers, as well as a neat little docking station.
Reviews of the latest version of WowCube were not very positive, claiming this to be the case too costly and nichewith a faint battery. These last points may change with the up-to-date refresh, but the price remains the same. However, if you’re willing to spend $300 on all of these screens, ordering now will ensure your product arrives in time for the holidays.
