Hello again, PlayStation community! My name is Sam Eng and I’m the creator of Skate Story, a game in which you play as a glass-bodied demon doomed to travel the Underworld and devour the Moon to fulfill the devil’s contract. Today I’m proud to share that Skate Story will be released on December 8 on PS5.
It’s been a while since the last PlayStation Blog post where we announced that Skate Story was coming to PS5, but I wanted to update you all on some modern gameplay features, the news behind the all-new original Blood Cultures soundtrack, and how the PS5 DualSense controller can assist shape your gaming experience.
Skateboarding history or true story
Did you know? Skate Story is based on a true story. Yes, it’s true, people. Sure, it’s a bit dramatized for effect, but it’s all 100% real. Of course, the names and places have also been changed, for the privacy of those involved. For example, initially it wasn’t Frog who ran the bagel shop, but Skater had to find a lawyer before signing the Devil’s Contract.
The sound (track) of the city
Blood Cultures brings the true life of New York to life with a brand modern, original 12-track soundtrack. The way they capture the heartbeat of the city – the chaos, the beauty, the endless movement, elevates the game to something richer and more alive.
Their music not only accompanies the world, it defines it. I clicked on Blood Cultures to be guided by the statement above.
“When I was working on the soundtrack, Sam gave me some crazy instructions. He said, ‘I don’t know, it might sound industrial… it’s the underground world, you know?’ Industrial? So I decided to apply for a job at the local train depot. I was worried they wouldn’t like the bag I was wearing over my head, but I figured they’d all wear masks anyway! They were really nice, but they kept insisting that I take off my jacket. I won’t do it! So I didn’t get the job. The foreman said, “don’t trip on the way out!” I should have heeded the warning as I tripped over some metal beams. What a fall! It sounded great! Then I realized… I should try New York itself!
Then I drove around town with my little pocket field recorder and various diminutive objects: spoons, chopsticks, my grandmother’s father’s watch, and started recording myself hitting things! Eventually I realized that inanimate objects work quite well and I was able to get some really nice samples out of them. I recorded a lot of city sounds. I tried unrecognized pillars under the bridge, to classic sounds like the sporadic screech of the subway at the last stop.

Dynamic board consumption + stickers, stickers and stickers
The best thing about skateboarding is buying a modern board. So is there anything better to make you buy a modern board than completely destroying your current setup? In Skate Story, every trick, grind and slide will destroy your deck. If you do more sniffing, the nose will wear out. If you do more slides, scratches will appear on the tail.
On your way to the Moon, you will come across various souvenir shops. These are gifts created especially for your soul. You can then exchange the collected parts of your rented soul for modern decks, fresh trucks and stylish wheels. Create your own setup, then bless it with modern stickers.
Stickers add style, personalization and prevent your deck from falling apart. Remember, however, that you can only apply the sticker once! Once you stick it, it sticks. Unsatisfied with where you have it stuck? Sand it down!
The stickers on the board will wear off while riding. Enjoy the ephemeral nature of many of the self-adhesive designs you’ll find.
The DualSense controller’s backlight will blind you in the dim
Playing Skate Story on PlayStation 5 with a DualSense controller is a multi-sensory experience. I designed the DualSense lightweight bar effect in Skate Story to create a lovely effect that illuminates the dim. As you explore the underground world, your tricks will be broadcast via DualSense. The lightweight strip will reflect Skater’s glass body, a lens for the harsh lights of the underworld in this eternal night.
HOLD your combo to deal damage
To defeat the heavenly beasts from the underworld, you will have to deal massive damage with your skateboard.
Each trick you perform will add to your skating combo. Your combo will boost even more if you perform different stylish tricks. Performing tricks at high speed, over objects, gaps and catching air will boost your combos. If you repeat tricks or ride too slowly, the value will still boost, but not as much.
Hold the line by changing it and combining tricks at a stylish pace. In the Moonlight you can STILL your combo to finish it explosively. Any trick you perform in this lane will be rolled as damage around you. All your tricks and combos will be reset, allowing you to start a modern line. Keep pushing. Chain a lovely skate line. Stop the lunar projection. A delicious moon awaits.
Well, I think that’s all for now – it’s been a long journey leading up to the final months of development, and I hope you all get to experience Skate Story on PS5 when it launches on December 8.
