Whereling Review

Okomotive based in Switzerland will once again run away from dystopia. In their previous distance: lonely sails and its continuation you played a child running a cut land, which often resembled a raging beast – the last surviving specimen of the breed of monstrous engines, carrying you right through empty cities and a jumping industry towards some novel beginning. The latest Okomotive game slightly shifts the poles of metaphor, even when it moves to 3D movement: instead of a beast machine, you drive a herd of intriguing robotic beasts of “Calicorn” to the promised earth outside the peaks.

The game begins with your character – another persistent, face -free kid in red – waking up under a fragment and discovering the first calikozy in the alley. You initiate your hairy fees using abandoned streets haunted by Ryk Ruch, arriving at the tourist billboard, which shows some calicly upstairs – this is your unspoken final goal.

The very end of the game and this billboard are essentially the same, because they both try to employ rustic desires, non -terrible anywhere else. As a story about “returning to nature”, I don’t think Herdling has a lot to say. He feels less sophisticated than lonely sails, more simply utopian in his story about the indigent SPROG and accompanying creatures retreating from the scrap metal of modernity. But as a study of human relationships/animals and the way they can be done according to the game design, it is a bit addictive. In addition, he has an ordinary captivating Okomotive sound landscape, and these mountains are certainly effortless to the eyes.

Sometimes during the analysis of the game it is helpful to start with forgetting about the whole context. What is a herd, according to hunger itself? It is a single shape – a drop that extends to the wedge during movement and closes into abrasive oval when at rest. You stand behind a drop and wave the shepherd shepherd’s staff to send the flower channel through his heart, as if he was following the compass needle. Then the herd moves towards the line.

Climb the blob and wave your staff again to whistle it on another trajectory. Hold the button so that it moves slower when you move on a unsafe area. Put it back and back to have a drop of drops through a denser thicket. Tailor of the next button twice to stop the object on the spot. Hammer and hold this button so that the Blob Wychura gua with the wind – a miniature challenge at the end of the game.

You do not shape or control the blob in the first person. You got a third person’s camera, which gently draws back to the panorama when there is something spectacular on the horizon. Without the convenience of this drone camera – so subtle in its changes, it is so effortless to take for granted – the internal would be a much more challenging experience and perhaps more intriguing. You would be part of the drop, downstairs stink and waves of cattle muscles, unable to surprise routes and obstacles.

Your calikos are blue, yellow and red marked, and these colors also drop the world and emphasize its infrequent spread of collectors. Blue flowers fill the meter that allows you to direct the wind and initiate stampede – whether for pure joy or force a herd in a slippery glacier. Red flowers initiate or extend stampede automatically: these are Mario Kart speed pads. Yellow flowers poll fur with painting energy, which can be answered to restore aged wall paintings, unlocking the path through some ruins that connect to dreams in the history of the original Kalikorn and their shepherds. Three basic colors repeat obsessively in these ruins, as if geography itself was a hidden calikorn.

In addition to the municipal prologue, you will save a dozen other Calikorn on the route to this promised mountain. The “taming” process is necessarily improved: you may have to bring a wounded calikorn, which stops the health of the fruit to gain his trust, but above all you approach and do QTE, as in a rather less cozy distant Krak Primal. Then you can replace them. I called all my colleagues, which was very entertaining until I finished my colleagues and I had to a tunnel for the latest history of departures and dismissals.

Calls are in all shapes and sizes. Some are built like Yorkshire Terriers, rising to swad legs. Others are the sedate penguins of the emperor in the siples. Some of the Kalikorn have or acquire features such as “Brave” (this would be the hardware editor James) and “Rascal” (which would be our aged editor -in -chief of Graham – RPS in Peace).

Detailed in the Pause menu, these behaviors did not impress me during my review, even at periodic intervals by the bonfire, in which the herd spreads in a stage way, and you can do things such as Hoik A Ball to play. You can also weaken calichen, pull branches and branches from their leather and decorate them with bombs and harnesses that litter the landscape. These last three actions have no functional influence that I noticed: they are simply an opportunity to express feelings, a chance to bind to individual calicars.

I can’t say that I really got involved with my calikorn. Partly because I decorated them randomly, according to my player, understanding that you do not leave collecting. At the end of Endling – my game lasted four hours – it was like running a battalion with roaring Christmas trees.

The wider complexity is that the efforts of the game of sales of individuality Kalikorn are contrary to the practical need to treat them as a blob, the tension with which I loved Okomotive to do much more. The main consequence of taming the Kalikorn is that it is more challenging to run blob. Calicorns can develop a little, grabbing the spiky scenery or brittle objects, even falling from the cliffs at script intervals if you are not attentive. It’s so troublesome that you start thinking twice about later additions. When I was deep in the forest, trying to move around the maze of crushing alarm and avoid the fury of massive demonic owls, I regretted adding Ollie (our editor guides) to my herd, although it could be.

Owls are Herdling antagonists, a population of predators who, if I decipher without a word, drove Kalikorn out of their aged Tupaks. They are shocking present, their ivory masks shine in mist, but there are certainly also stand-ins for the real villains of this song: all the bloody people who have built a terrible urban garbage from which you are out of.

The last observation decreases, because during you play a man, the chairman of the inhuman animals lives in what is at least partly selfish fashion. Apart from the duties regarding care, you periodically need the calikorn to push boulders and trunks from the path. They are also elated to serve as platforms when you need to scale the shelf and fill the very uncomplicated puzzle of the area – useful, considering that you do not have a jump button. In this way, Herdling examines the desire to be intimate with other creatures, while using them.

The real shepherd of the game can be his result, another growing collection of orchestral songs inspiring the heart from the composer Joel Schoch. Just like in Far: Lone Sails, it’s the same album as a video game game that explains the tight length of the gear: snow hills and slopes often seem secondary, organized around the peaks and the charts of music.

The imperceptible orchestra is another type of herd that reflects the one you drive in front of you – sometimes passing on to individual performers, when your beasts are dispersed, only to gather furiously when they are in full flight. This is a wonderful, audible modeling of a disordered group of beings in motion. It is also an audible expression of power over these beings and the limits of their simulated autonomy.
