New 3D printing technology. Hard and tender structures in one print – the fresh resin can create both with different lightweight sources

There are currently a lot of filament and resin options for 3D printing, but we have never come across such. Scientists from the University of Texas in Austin have developed a fresh 3D printing technique (noticed by New Atlas) At the same time, it allows you to print both tough and malleable materials using only one resin.

This process not only allows you to produce two different hardness of 3D printed materials, but also print these two. This means that tough and tender materials are printed as one and you do not need to be connected separately after printing. The process uses a non -standard UV printer, which is built to provide different wavelengths to create differences in stiffness.

This process is referred to by the team as a double lightweight printing system and required a non -standard resin. Different material structures are created with different lights. Soft, malleable material is produced using concentrated purple lightweight, while the tough material is created using robust UV lightweight.

An example film shows the printer’s ability and also indicates potential future exploit. The film presents a replica of a human knee of naturally moving, with stiff bone structures that support malleable ligaments. Another demonstration emphasized the malleable electronic device, which was able to bend without breaking thanks to tough components to prevent too much bend of internal wire.

Cases of using a 3D printer, which can produce tough and tender materials on the same facility, are huge. There are many nippy things that we can imagine by creating fun, but practical possibilities are equally thrilling. The team suggests that their work can be used to create or improve state-of-the-art prosthetics projects to turn on a more natural movement.
