How to play
Connections is one of the most popular (and demanding) daily puzzle games published by The New York Times. The purpose of the connections is to group 16 words of the day for four groups, in which each group of four words has a common topic.
For example, the words “Hook”, “Nana”, “Peter” and “Wendy” are the characters of Peter Pan. Or to take another example, “Action”, “Ballpark”, “Go” and “Stick” are all words that often appear just before the word “drawing”.
Your task is to find out what these topics combine different words together – but be careful, because for a lot of time there are misleading combinations with red herring placed only to lose you! To win the game, you need to find all four connections without making 4 mistakes. During the fourth error, the game ended and the answer is revealed automatically.
Each of the four groups in the puzzle every day is also attributed to a different color, which represents how straightforward or challenging to find a connection. These colors are: yellow (easiest), green (straightforward), blue (medium) and purple (the most challenging).

What is today’s response to calls?
Here is the answer to today’s connection puzzle on Wednesday, May 14:
- Yellow: Absorb using capillaries (draw, pull, sucking, wick)
- Green: Greek prefix (hyper, kilo, finish, neo)
- Blue: Title talking animals of the film (Babe, Bolt, Dumbo, Ted)
- Purple: Starting with serene letters (Gnome, Knee, Mnemonic, Psyche)
I did not set time, but it definitely took me a moment to find my first connection theme. I blame it all for “Wick”, which made me look for strings and charming villages. After gathering the other three words, it became clear that “the wick” was to be a verb.
I also noticed “Dumbo” quite early, but I needed closer to find other talking animals because I know them less. However, I suspect that most people saw at least a few appropriate films, so I don’t think the blue theme was particularly challenging.
Just when I started thinking about the motif of “Greek/ancient origin”, based on the psyche and hyper, I suddenly realized that “Gnome” was distinguished by his serene start. When you think about something like this, you can’t find the rest of the group, right? I would say that serene letters were a bit more obvious, which makes the green motif is challenging today.
