VIDEO: Comparison of the DOOM game shows the decades of evolution

Published:

To mark the release of Doom: The Dark Ages on PS5 this week, we decided to look back at the ID Software series and how his gameplay has evolved in the last three decades.

From pixel beginnings in 1993 to the wonderfully detailed districts of the re -start trilogy, the Boomer shooter’s father has never stayed in one place too long. You can watch this evolution during a handy eight -minute movie on PUSH Square YouTube channel.

The original game game and its continuation (through increased remasters on PS4 and PS5), is almost surprising how well the experience of the game is maintained. With great emphasis on tight corridors, levels reminiscent of maze and exhaustion of ammunition, forces you to employ the best weapon for work and continue the-Mantra movement, which remains for most entries from the series.

Doom 3

Doom 3 is a black sheep of this demonic family, doubling a claustrophobic feeling to get a horror. We do not necessarily think that Doom 3 is bad The game is simply not suitable for the Doom series.

Doom (2016)

This is certainly clear when the franchise returns 12 years after Doom 3 with again and simply named doom. Running 2016 is skillful, quick and extremely energetic. Playing in the PS4 version is still perfectly controlled, and in our opinion offers the most balanced approach to the DOOM formula from the appropriate restart trilogy.

However, for us Doom Eternal can be the best of the group, with a blindly quick game mixed with devilish weapons, intensively platform arenals and subsequent demons that your super shotgun can deal with. This is a hardcore adrenaline shot for the FPS genre.

Eternal destruction

And this leads us to Doom: The Dark Ages, the latest offer in this cult series. You can read our full thoughts in ours PS5 review But to break this, we called it “a fantastically cruel scorer from the first person”, despite the more methodical, slower approach to the fight.

The murky centuries are very similar to these first entries from the series in the 90s, where instead of jumping and closing, you tell around enemies. However, the saw saw and its evaporation system give the fight a real rhythmic character, ensuring that the game still has its own taste.

The headrest of the dark centuries

Looking back, each of the games in the series has its own reason to play, even in 2025. We really love the tactical nature of the originals, in which great emphasis is placed on learning map systems and enemy positioning.

To say, we love how the series has evolved along with its re -trilogy. Each entry offers its own approach to the Demonic Bullet Hell formula. It is not necessarily a coincidence that the same dish is adapted and improved, but different dishes matching different tastes.

But we want to know what you think about this evolution. Glory Kill Your Way in comments to tell us about your favorite approach to the iconic first person game.
