Preview: Clair Obsurpur: Expedition 33 looks stunning, hits strenuous and feels fresh on PS5

Clair Obsurpur: Expedition 33 is an ambitious title heading for PS5 this year from the modern Sandfall Interactive studio. However, playing a three -hour demo this week, we would never guess that this is the first project of the French developer. Expedition 33 is a polished and aaa impressions that derives inspiration from JRPGS, but then makes it his own thrilling performances, flashy, addictive fight and one of the most inventive world projects we’ve ever seen.

History is what really catches you. In the sinister bolenice inspired by Belle époque France, he paints a smaller number of each year, and everyone or age disappears from dust. The title Expedition 33 consists of those in the last year of life before they are painted with existence. This is not the first trip that tries to take off Bolarka, but I hope this is the last one.

However, the tragedy strikes almost immediately when the crew travels to the house of Bolenism, the continent, a twisted landscape consisting of sunk buildings, floating rocks and littered remains of previous expeditions. What can bring you out of his visualizations (to which we reach) is how gloomy and earnest the set story is.

It is a world flooded with tragedy and death and the severity of the situation was quickly established. Even without the whole context of the heroes or the world, we were struck by a few moments at the beginning of our demo. There are moments of Levita, but the desire to play to plunge into the darkness of your plot, which really distinguished us. It is a testimony of writing and building the world that without establishing a chapter of history we were still closed and willingly pushed the narrative.

Many of the immersion come from the visualization and you can’t disappear as impressive. Acting on the Unreal Engine 5, the character models are keen and the backgrounds are extremely detailed. However, not only from the resolution perspective, Expedition 33 impresses. The artistic direction is different than everything we have ever seen.

From a handful of areas we studied, he had its own element in this fantasy world. One of them saw how the ethereal tree occupies most of the horizon lines, while the Bolenice canvas with ominous “33” shine from afar. Another was an underwater area with air bubbles floating around us, gigantic sea creatures above it, chained the mines scattered over the horizon, and the lights of the collapse through the water, giving the whole a magical shade.

Then there is between this level, which requires a miniature tilt style. This is where you travel from one main area to another. Expedition 33 consists of several open levels, with miniature deviations from the main path, enabling space to search.

While from our experience you never discover anything bigger except a little booty or some audio diaries, both really feed this experience in a concise way. Audio diaries give us an insight into the previous trips that we dropped, taking into account the mysterious nature of its setting. Then Loot can lend a hand build characters by connecting with one of the strongest aspects of our time with demo: fight.

The fight in Expedition 33 is primarily based on the turn, but Sandfall has included real -time activities to diversify every conflict. Players can avoid parry and even jump – but the success window is extremely narrow. There are also quick events when you give stronger blows, asking you to pay attention during the fight again. This particular writer is not very dependent on the tournament -based fight, so these corrections made the system more addictive.

It is basic to overwhelm with all types of damage, defensive attitudes and skills when the game throws a tutorial on the tutorial. However, after a few hours we began to settle quite nicely. Each skill attack required a selected number of points that can be scored with basic blows or successful parquet. Like many games with turning systems, lining each character to raise the second harmful gear for the enemy is extremely satisfying.

And like everything else in Expedition 33, the fight is great stylish. Menu designs are spectacular, and skillful animations give each attack real strenuous. We also need to shout music. It is brilliant throughout the entire demo, but especially kidnaps during the battle.

Buildcrafting from our miniature time with the game also has great potential. With each modern level you get three points to levels of aspects, such as health and strength statistics. Then you also get skill points to unlock certain attacks, so you can focus on some types of injuries and even on treatment abilities. Then You have your weapon, which you discover while traveling, and passive reinforcements called Picos to strengthen these skills even more.

At the end of our demo, we already had many options, and all this also applies to each character in your party. We imagine that we will spend a lot of time improving compilation and playing with skills after full release, especially since the fight itself is rapid and great fun.

Come at the end of our demo, we remained willing to play more, but almost a little disappointed that we pushed the beginning of the game, falling into the ongoing story. For us it is a sign of great writing, because above all we wanted to learn more about these characters and the mystery of Bolenism.

In addition, Expedition 33 is good, elderly fun, with Snappa and a addictive fight, a dense compilation system and some of the best -looking environments of the year – if not a generation. We want to see how everything works on PS5, and we have an attraction that it will exploit additional PS5 Pro juice.

However, we need to compliment the balance act that Sandfall does to make Expedition 33 JRPG Hybrid. It has all the features of the genre with parties, abilities, turn -based struggle and stories. But he does all this with a much more refined and almost mature approach to telling stories and characters. Adjust this to real-time combat elements and its highest quality visualizations, and you have a game that in our opinion will have a much more western-main appeal than a typical JRPG.

Regardless of whether you are a gigantic fan of JRPG or not, Clair Obsurpur: Expedition 33 is a game you should look for. His impeccable art design and a high concept premise make it extremely basic to get into his world. Great character drama and growing depth for character and fight compilation will invest you even more. Perhaps we only scratched the surface of our demo time, but if Sandfall Interactive is able to keep it during a full game, we could be really special here.
