- Marvel Snap has been pulled from launch in the United States due to the TikTok ban
- TikTok publisher and developer ByteDance is also the parent company of the makers of Second Dinner
- It’s unclear when, if ever, Snap will return to mobile devices
It’s going to be quite a successful weekend for Marvel Snap fans, but unfortunately not in the good sense of the word. This is because, following the ban on social media app TikTok, publisher ByteDance also pulled many releases of its games, apparently in protest; and yes, this also applies to the popular comic book themed card game.
Those of you who are well-read in the broader political world will know that the TikTok ban was huge news due to accusations from US politicians that it constituted an “application controlled by a foreign adversary.” While many have actually termed this as a TikTok ban, it also covers any apps published by ByteDance and their subsidiaries.
While politicians may not have expected it, I think ByteDance’s sudden move could be seen as malicious compliance on their part. It certainly seems to have had the intended effect of enraging Marvel Snap fans towards this political act that they might otherwise miss.
Dismantled
I have no doubt that downloads of Marvel Snap and other apps owned and published by ByteDance will continue to cause a stir among fans. Whether this will have a major political impact or not is anyone’s guess, but if I were a bit cynical, I’d say that ByteDance giving fans a little information in the form of advance warnings may have been intentional to shock fans into expressing their anger.
If you are curious, you can take a look official text of the ban and understand it better on the official website of the Congress.
