Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Computer port is almost here, and with launch getting closer, Square-Enix has announced that the game has been fully verified on Steam Deck.
– said director Naoki Hamaguchi in the post on X/Twitter: “We have received Steam Deck verification from Valve. I am grateful to the development team for their cooperation in optimizing the game until the last minute. I hope many people will experience Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Steam.”
Considering that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth doesn’t have its own PlayStation 4 port, it’s surprising that it gains the coveted Steam Deck Verified badge, a feat that’s mainly intended to Ultimate Fantasy 16 failed to achieve.
To celebrate, Square-Enix created three “specially crafted” Steam Deck units; but this isn’t just a custom case or repaint, it’s a full Chocobo makeover.
One of these custom Steam Deck units, decorated with Chocobo’s iconic yellow fluffy fur, feathers and beak, is featured in the official video below. However, Square Enix warned, “we do not recommend wrapping high-tech gaming equipment in fur in your home.”
Three furry Steam Decks have been created, and upon further inspection they appear to be built on an OLED Steam Deck model (this can be identified by the color of each analog stick). However, you can’t facilitate but wonder how practical it would be to play on Chocobo’s steam deck, considering all the feathers and flocking can get in the way. However, Square Enix left the fan intake open at the back, allowing the system to breathe.
If you’re salivating at the thought of playing the 100-hour RPG on your furry Steam Deck, Square-Enix has joked on social media that it will host some sort of giveaway or competition so that a few lucky fans can get their hands on it.
It’s worth noting that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s Steam Deck verification has made me believe that the game will eventually come to the just-announced Nintendo Switch 2. Indeed, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is reportedly coming to Nintendo Switch in 2026, after the launch of Final Fantasy 7 Console remake this year.
For now, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will debut on PC on January 23.
