Sony revealed via Bloomberg article that it has canceled PS5 projects from both Bluepoint and Bend Studio. Both developers remain open and will not be shut down, and Sony is currently working with both teams to determine what their next projects will be. According to the outlet’s Jason Schreier, the project Bluepoint was working on this whole time was a live-action God of War game.
The game that Bend Studio was developing was also a live service title. Sony hasn’t confirmed whether these two cancellations will lead to layoffs for either developer, but they remain open. Sony is “working closely with Bend and Bluepoint to identify next projects and plans to do everything we can to ensure minimal business impact,” Bloomberg reported. A Sony spokesperson confirmed that Sony will continue to make single-player and online games.
After wrapping up work on its PS5 launch title Demon’s Souls, Bluepoint has long claimed it was working on a fresh project that was billed as “original content.” It has now been confirmed that it was a live-action game in the God of War universe and was canceled due to “recent review”. The same goes for Bend Studio, where the team has been working for the past year. Schreier says Bluepoint assisted Santa Monica Studio with the development of God of War Ragnarok from 2020 to 2022 and has since been working on its own live-action version of the series.
“Bend and Bluepoint are incredibly talented teams that are valued members of the PlayStation Studios family, and we are working closely with each studio to determine what their next projects will be,” a Sony spokesperson told Bloomberg.
