Since release The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim in 2011, the game inspired one of the largest and most energetic modding communities in the history of video games. Countless enthusiasts have created mods ranging from quality of life changes that make the game easier to detailed graphical and content additions that completely change the fantasy world. Then, in December 2024, over a decade after its release, the modder gave us the most critical update to the game we’ll ever get: rats.
That’s all. They’re just rats.
This mod from MihailMods on NexusMods is called “Sewer rats” and adds rodents to the cities in the game. So if you’re wandering around a city like Whiterun, you might see a large rat running along the path. If you’re not a fan of vermin, I have good news: you can even kill the creature and it will drop loot just like other enemies in the game. Below you can watch a video showing how the mod works.
Honestly, this is a very high quality mod considering it’s all about rats. You won’t find the creatures outside the city, because that’s how pests work. Additionally, the rats have audio files so you can hear them chirping. This is part of a larger series of mods called The Mihail Monsters and Animals, which Mihail aims to create “the most complete set of creatures” for Skyrim with “respect for the pillars of knowledge.”
“Rather than pitifully throwing models and textures into the game, using 100% of the core mechanics, Mihail’s creations have a uniqueness and extraordinary zeal in idealization and implementation that will give you an experience you’ve never had before in the field,” Mihail said on mod page on NexusMods.
So if you want to boost your level of immersion and world building Skyrim one step, you can now download the mod for free on NexusMods. The creator just asks that if you like it, please confirm the mod on the site so people know it’s worth downloading.
