Minecraft beta versions now offer adorable sizzling and frosty piggy variants

According to me and the RPS staff who don’t dare interrupt me, Minecraft is the best game on PC. I played this game for three hours today and amidst the many building challenges and adventures, a little story emerged around a little pig. We named him Porky, caged him as our pet, and in an unfortunate accident, we saw him fall to his death from the sky island that was our home. RPS rest in peace, Porky.

How many affable pigs like Porky have there been in the last few hundred hours of gameplay? I’m not sure – dozens, hundreds – but such pigs may soon have a recent form. After 15 years, Mojang is adding recent types of pigs to Minecraft.

In particular, it will receive two recent pig variants. The frosty pig is covered with fur and can be found in frosty and frozen biomes; the hot pig that can be found in sandy biomes is rusty brown. Mojang call it “hot pig” because they know that basically all pigs are sizzling.

These adorable pork chops are part of several smaller updates coming to Minecraft, and all of them are currently available for testing in Java Edition (and only a few are available for testing in Bedrock).

Leaves are now falling in forest biomes, flying from the treetops and leaving trash on the ground. Leaf mulch can be used to decorate the blocks and make rustling sounds as you walk on it. In meadows and birch forests you will also find wildflowers that have many stages of growth and can be harvested to be turned into dye. Currently, only falling leaves are present in the Bedrock preview and beta.

Finally, the Lodestone crafting recipe has been changed. This block, which compasses point towards to lend a hand players find their way home, previously required eight carved stone bricks and a netherite ingot to craft. Netherite is not uncomplicated to obtain in Minecraft, it requires a long and joyful visit to the Nether to obtain Ancient Rubble. Considering that Lodestone is intended to lend a hand players with the straightforward task of not getting lost near home, it seems a bit silly, so Lodestone can now be crafted using a regular iron ingot instead of netherite. This turns a slow game item into an early or mid game item, which makes more sense.

All these changes are tiny, but God, I play this game so much now. I’m so glad there are leaves on the ground. My hobbit houses will look extremely quaint with leaves on the ground outside.
