The amazing PS5 Welcome Center was designed by a miniature, passionate team

The way this happened, however, is a bit unconventional. I’m talking to Game file (Paid) Cory Gasaway – vice president of PlayStation’s product, gaming and player experience division – revealed that the concept was the result of an internal “hackathon,” a sort of collaborative computer engineering project a bit like Game Jam.

“Welcome Hub was the result of a hackathon project designed by a small team of people passionate about the space,” Gasaway said. “We all loved the idea and supported them to make progress in turning this project into something special – which is now the landing page that millions of gamers around the world see when they launch their console.”

The nippy thing about Welcome Hub is that you can customize it based on what you want to see; you can prioritize trophies if you like virtual trinkets, or friends if you prefer to play on social media. According to Gasaway, the two most frequently used widgets are the DualSense battery indicator and the SSD storage tracker.

The concept was designed with expansion in mind, so theoretically Sony could add more widgets in the future, although Gasaway wouldn’t comment on any recent additions that might be in development.

Are there any particular widgets you would like to integrate with Welcome Hub and why? Let us know in the comments section below.
