NYT Connections today (game #574) – answers
The answers for today’s Connections game, #574, are…
- YELLOW: VERY ARTERY Calm, serene, sleepy, snail-paced
- GREEN: MAKE MONEY GROSS, PRODUCTION, NET, EFFICIENCY
- BLUE: REMOTE CONTROL FUNCTIONS HOME, MUTE, STOP, VOLUME
- PURPLE: WORDS BEFORE “DRUM” Ear, kettle, oil, snare
- My rating: Easy
- My result: 1 error
Very uncommon Connections for me today, as the first group I received was the purple WORDS BEFORE “DRUM” collection. I got there with one mistake; I initially thought that EAR was related to VOLUME and MUTE, which instead turned out to be REMOTE CONTROL FUNCTIONS.
“Mute” is a sort of remote control feature that I only discover when I accidentally press it – usually while sitting on it, and usually at some significant moment in the latest episode of a tense drama – and have to scan the buttons to turn it off. I have similar problems with Netflix, which I think I watch with subtitles because I’m lost in thought and don’t want to disturb anyone, but I actually watch it with subtitles on because I don’t remember how to turn the subtitles off.
Yesterday’s NYT Connections Answers (Saturday, January 4, Game 573)

- GREEN: CONNECTORS BUCKLE, CLIP, HOOK, TENSION
- BLUE: MARK COMPLETE CHECK, CROSS, HIT, SCREAM
- PURPLE: PRESENTED IN DALI’S ‘ENDURING MEMORY’ Ant, Branch, CLOCK, MELTING
What are NYT calls?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is effortless, yellow is slightly more tough, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very tough.
The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.
It’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can unrecognized answers.
You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
