I launched it Neon white on Steam the other day after I hadn’t played it for a few years. But this time I didn’t play. I just loaded up on different stages to hear the soundtrack. Angel Matrix’s fantastic 2022 first-person racing game is backed by an appropriately energetic, synth- and drum-heavy soundtrack by Machine Girl that rocks. And when Neon white was released, it was my first stern contact with drum and bass music. Repeating all the steps to get the best results allowed the melody to become memorable and since then it has become one of my favorite genres of music that works in any mood and situation.
I’m a sucker for listening to instruments while I’m working because there’s nothing better to support me achieve a state of flow while writing (hearing the words sometimes distracts me). Somehow the erratic polished movement of the drums and bass keeps my brain working all the time. Do you wash the dishes or maybe go to the grocery store? Let’s go To go. DnB songs are often less than 2 minutes long each, so they can be easily picked up and put down or listened to several times in a row without feeling too tired.
The world of drum and bass is huge, and I feel like I’ve barely dipped my toes in it yet. But the more I listen, the more cold artists I find. If you’re looking for artist recommendations, I’ll look for a few songs Black balloons, boy 2000, Currents passing throughAND TOKYOPILL. I especially liked looping clips on Instagram by Star Power Drums, an expert in the genre who makes bringing drum and bass tracks to life on a real drum kit look simple.
My brief foray into the genre also introduced me to older game soundtracks that feature phenomenal drum and bass that I now appreciate, such as Ibuki scene With Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. Oh, and Amon Tobin’s work Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory it is timeless. Also the whole thing Monkey escapesoundtrack It’s going strenuous. The thing is, I heard these songs when I was a child or teenager and for some reason I didn’t think much of them. But playing Neon white this was the highlight of the moment where the music captivated me and through this lens I can appreciate older songs in a novel way. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m on a mission to find more drums and bass that I’ve been missing throughout gaming history (please support).
