Apple TV+ is free this weekend and it’s secretly hiding tons of great shows

Published:

Apple TV+ is a weird ancient streaming service that spends wads of endless Apple money on incredibly costly, prestige TV shows and movies, and then hides it all as best it can. In recent months, it occurred to the company that maybe it would be good for people to see what it was doing by adding the service as an option on Amazon Prime, and now it’s offering a completely free weekend to lure you in. Simply put: There’s also a lot of confusion about when it actually starts.

Apparently it’s not set up so that you have to cancel after the free weekend ends on January 5, which is good. I say supposedly because at this time we can’t offer anything other than the standard seven-day free trial, which does require cancellation. This is also worth mentioning Apple’s own press release regarding the offerdescribes it as lasting from January 3 to 5, but the embedded video indicates it is from January 4 to 5. We’ve reached out to Apple for clarification, but there’s no clear idea when exactly this starts.

If you Power make it work, there’s tons of great stuff to watch on the streamer, seriously some of the best TV over the last few years. My personal favorite is Siloan adaptation of Wool’s novel, the action of which takes place in a post-apocalyptic underground bunker. Then there it is For all humanitya great historical drama set in an alternate timeline, set in a version of a world where Russia defeated America in the Moon landing and the ensuing space race. Both are suspenseful dramas.

Then there it is Cutting offBen Stiller and Adam Scott’s amazing twist in a workplace comedy where all is clearly not right, BillPeels“Lawrence’s Comedy Ted Lasso following the American coach of the British soccer team and indeed a comedy-drama with a Bill Lawrence murder mystery Bad monkeyand Vince Vaughn has finally found a platform where he can shine.

There’s plenty of other sci-fi stuff there too Invasion, Dark matter, Foundation, Constellationand Godzilla spin-off show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Other highly rated programs include: Slow horses starring Gary Oldman, Bad sisters with the amazing Sharon Horgan and Reservation starring Cate Blanchett.

AND plot of the above shows have been canceled, so cruel is the world of spending hundreds of millions on TV shows that never have a chance to find an audience, but none of them are as brutal as Taika Waititi’s reimagining of a Terry Gilliam film Time bandits. But you know, if you’re only planning on browsing the archive for one weekend, you might as well watch what looks nice.

Hmm, Apple also made a few videos.

Is there a catch? Bright. To do this, you need to sign up for an Apple ID, which means it’s a massive database game run by a megacorporation that wants to collect huge numbers of email addresses to bombard with more solicitations. But of course it is, and we can all unsubscribe or use a temporary email address.

Whether it actually starts on Friday or Saturday (we’ll update accordingly), this seems like a pretty decent deal. If you want one show what you want to focus on, choose Silo. AND Cutting off. AND For all humanity.
