The annual Awesome Games Done Quick superstream starts this weekend and will be musical in nature. Events will include the player completing a set of Elden Ring boss battles using a saxophone as a controller, and 16 minutes of Crazy Taxi with a live band while the driver collects fares. Other notable events include two players storming The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild using a single joypad, and a love attempt to clear “all romances” in Fallout: New Vegas within 30 minutes – wait, there are romance options in the game New Vegas ?
Oh, I completely forgot they existed eight named characters in Bethesda’s radioactive wasteland, with which you can perform a horizontal hip hurray. Including one robot called “Fisto”. Well, you can expect it on Thursday. The festival of mischief starts on Sunday 5 and lasts until Sunday 12. A whole week of crazy antics. You can see the full schedule on the Games Done Quick website.
Crazy Taxi’s appearance at the speedrunning festival may be inspired by news of the upcoming reboot. The musical accompaniment may include venerable favorites from the original soundtrack. Long-toothed taxi drivers will remember that the Dreamcast and Arcade versions had a punk rock OST with a lot of Offspring and Bad Religion, but these songs it was removed in later editions games due to licensing rights.
However! You can watch the band scheduled for Awesome Games Done Quick perform Offspring’s “Way Down The Line” at this movie with a messagewhich they performed along with gameplay from the player’s previous speedrun. They even changed some of the lyrics to make joking references to speedrunning. I also like the way they suddenly stop every time the game time expires and a menu appears.
On the jazz side of things, you may have seen saxophonist “Dr. Doot” before. Elden Ring series without hits in due time. This time he will face a “controlled” group of bosses. It’s very satisfying to hear the brass creaks and groans as he calmly runs away from danger.
There are also some newer games on the list. Alan Wake 2, Windblown, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the remake of Silent Hill 2 will witness various types of speedruns. Ambitious people also plan to go through UFO 50, and the organizers will devote 50 minutes to the retro collection. Does this mean they will spend a minute on each play? Or do they plan to complete as many games in the compilation as possible? I don’t know. But this might be engaging.
Games Done Quick organizers regularly raise millions of dollars for charity during their biannual events. This year they are once again supporting the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Last year at Summer Games Done Quick (the brief beach brother of the classic January event), a Sekiro player was interrupted during a speedrun by the most surprising Windows interruption – sticky keys. But that didn’t stop the shinobi from surpassing the $2.5 million mark.
