Studio Software reveals Elden Ring: Nightreign, a three-player co-op spin-off

Remember when From Software’s Hidetaka Miyazaki said they weren’t thinking about Elden Ring 2, but a sequel to Elden Ring in general? Well, who had the “three player co-op” option on their bingo card?

Just announced at the annual Geoff Awards Winter Gala, Elden Ring: Nightreign is a multiplayer-focused spin-off that pits a trio of Elden Ringers against waves of enemies in a world that reshuffles every time you play. Premiere in 2025. Here’s the trailer.

According to a press release from publisher Bandai Namco, Nightreign takes place in a parallel version of the Elden Ring universe. Players can choose from eight pre-made characters, each with different abilities, and the goal is to survive three nights in the Limveld, fending off both regular enemies and bosses. Unfortunately, the map also shrinks at night. Failed runs earn you relics that are used to customize and upgrade your character so you can avoid such a terrible death in the future.

The press release aptly notes that Nightreign is “unlike any other experience created by FromSoftware before,” being a “condensed action RPG” in which the map and enemies change between rounds. “Defeating larger enemies and venturing into more dangerous parts of the map will reveal more powerful weapons and greater rune rewards,” it continues. “Find Places of Grace to give each hero a chance to advance and gain key power.”

As for the timing, it looks faster and more acrobatic than Elden Ring, with characters climbing walls like ninjas and flying into the air using summoned bird creatures. The trailer features many bosses, including some you may recognize from other FromSoftware games.

The “condensed action RPG” bit fits in with Miyazaki’s suggestion earlier this year that Elden Ring was the upper end of the scale of the project at From Software and that the “next stage” might be smaller games. You can read more about Nightreign on the website Couple.
