Factorio is known among the more technical segment of its gamers as one of the most optimized video game programs. However, optimization-obsessed fans still manage to push the boundaries of factory builder simulation… and then utilize mods to push them beyond them.
Thus was born Eternity Cluster, this year’s Factorio megaproject, in which hundreds of players networked their factories via the mod to create the God Factory, a system of factories designed to produce over 1,000,000 science per minute, or SPM. While a normal Factorio player might need 30 or 40 SPM to complete the game by firing a rocket, God Factory’s maximalist approach was to create as much as possible.
“The hardest obstacle was not getting burned out on the project,” Hornwitser, one of the organizers and creator of the Clusterio mod that made it possible, told PC Gamer in March.
Ultimately, Eternity Cluster registered over 400 players who contributed a total of approximately 3,900 hours to the creation of God Factory. It’s the kind of massive community event that celebrates PC gaming and is making waves beyond its niche because of how chilly it is that people are coming together to collaborate on what they love in a modern, weird, unique way. way. One that even involves turning the game into something the creators never intended.
After breaking this huge record by optimizing networked factories, the Eternity Cluster team naturally wanted to expand their operations. You can read a lot more about this in our article on the Eternity Cluster.
So what do the creators of Clusterio and Eternity Cluster have planned for the future now that Factorio has a massive, well-received, planet-wide expansion? I shudder to think about it, but it certainly requires a lot more rockets.
