No one wanted this when rumors about the project were circulating, but the proof is in the pudding, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered proved many doubters wrong, providing perhaps the best example of what a remaster can achieve in 2024. Nixxes revolutionized Guerrilla Games’ effort with improved graphics that put it on par with Forbidden West, and PS5 Pro takes it to another level. This is currently one of the best-looking games on the Sony console; an impressive achievement for a game originally released seven years ago.

Atlus has had a ridiculously good year in 2024, and while Metaphor: ReFantazio will get most of the praise, there’s no forgetting the excellent job it did with the Persona 3 remake. Bringing back SEES to lend a hand fight the horrors of Darkest Hour was a brilliant move that made the classic The PS2 shined again and introduced it to a novel audience after selling gangbusters in Persona 5. Dungeon crawling is addictive, the reworked graphics are gorgeous, and the quality of life improvements lend a hand improve the JRPG in areas where the original fell miniature. It’s an all-around excellent game, so how about another Persona 4 remake from Atlus?

Is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth a pure remake that completely sticks to the source text? Like Final Fantasy VII Remake, absolutely not. However, even without these additional elements, Rebirth remains faithful to the PS1 classic, which makes it one of the biggest attractions of 2024 in this category. By adopting a more open zone format, Square Enix will breathe fresh life into memorable locations like Cosmo Canyon and Gongaga at an astonishingly high quality. Most of what you remember from the original title is there, but now it’s scaled up and bigger – just like the first part of the remake project. It may rightly have its critics, but it cannot be forgotten that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is one of the best remakes of 2024.

To say that Bloober Team had second thoughts during the Silent Hill 2 remake would be an understatement and a half. Based on previous projects, we doubted whether the developer could make it high. You too. We have never been happier when we were so wrong.
The PS5 remake of Silent Hill 2 faithfully restores the PS2 horror masterpiece and expands on it in just the right way, creating one of the biggest attractions of 2024. A true Game of the Year contender, Bloober Team has collaborated with Konami to create something truly unique. His story is resurrected as it was first written in 2001. The terrifying city remains the same, except that it has been built in selected areas to provide more opportunities for exploration and novel ideas. Silent Hill 2 on PS5 is the same as on PS2, but it’s not the same either. That’s the best thing about this kind of experience: you can be faithful while modernizing and redefining the source text. Silent Hill 2 does both, creating the best remake of the year.
