Remember that viral, nightmarish horror game about traversing Japanese subway stations? Well, the studio behind Godzilla is working on a film adaptation

Published:

The Exit 8, a liminal horror film in which you try to find your way out of a Japanese subway station, will be adapted into a film.

When it comes to video game adaptations, anything is on the table these days, including even the shortest horror movie. Next on this list is The Exit 8, a tiny and not-so-sweet horror movie that explains itself thusly: “You are trapped in a never-ending underground passage. Observe your surroundings carefully to reach “The Exit 8”. Weird! The whole thing lasts no longer than an hour, but it quickly gained huge popularity thanks to its sturdy atmosphere and setting. It’s not what you’d expect from a film adaptation, but it is, and from a very noteworthy studio: Toho, the same studio that created the incredibly iconic Godzilla.

No more official Exit movie website 8developer Kotake Create shared a statement (translated GamesRadar), saying, “Exit 8 will be made into a live-action film! I had no idea that when the game was released in overdue November 2023, a film adaptation would be announced about a year later, so I’m filled with enthusiastic surprise and gratitude.

“When I was approached about the film, I was wondering how to make a game film without a plot, but I think it will be interesting as a film without destroying the worldview and atmosphere of Exit 8! I also visited the filming site and it was really great to see this underground passage and my uncle in front of me. We hope you’re looking forward to it. I can’t wait for the premiere too!”

I’m not sure how this movie will be adapted, but I’m certainly curious to see it. This is the type of movie that could probably be made on a tight budget, so hopefully it will lead to some compelling movies. Let’s just hope this doesn’t traumatize the average Japanese rail user.
