Astro Bot reminded us all that PlayStation has a lot of good games that haven’t seen sequels in a while, and it turns out the company’s CEO said they’re considering bringing back the “past IP”

One of the best games of the year, Astro Bot, was a great reminder of how many great IPs PlayStation has and isn’t using, but that could change.

Astro Bot, which won the coveted Game of the Year award at The Game Awards this year, featured so many titles that are beloved PlayStation titles, but haven’t seen a modern game in them for ages. Some of them, like Spyro and Crash, are out of PlayStation’s reach, considering they’re currently owned by Xbox, and others, like Okami, are third parties, but hey, this one’s getting a sequel anyway! Still, there were plenty of classics that could really benefit from another installment, like Ape Escape, Gravity Rush, and Bloodborne.

There’s no word on whether any of these games will get a modern entry, and the final pair seems pretty unlikely, but PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst has said the company is interested in bringing back some older titles.

I’m talking to Famitsu (in translation VGC), Hulst said that “the various IPs we have are an important asset to PlayStation, and as part of our efforts to strengthen our portfolio, we continue to look for opportunities to leverage existing intellectual property as well as develop new franchises. Our goal is to publish games from the best creators in the world, both on and off PlayStation, and we’ve achieved a lot of success so far by working closely with third-party development studios.”

Hopefully this doesn’t mean that Ape Escape will return as a gacha game where you can pull out different monkeys (although at the time of writing this sounds like a pretty good idea), but Sony is prioritizing live support otherwise – although not everything went smoothly – anything is possible. At least give us a Bloodborne remaster, Sony, please…
