Unicorn Overlord is another hit from the extremely talented developer Vanillaware. This strategy RPG is a beautifully crafted experience, from its visuals to its gameplay mechanics. It’s true that the story is a bit trite, but amassing an army of fantastically diverse characters is never lifeless – and finding ways to get the most out of them is a fiendishly addictive process. A flawless adventure.

Outside of the imposing walls of Midgar, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth can breathe and fully reflects the great sense of adventure that was so prevalent in the original PS1 classic. Rebirth expands on much of what Remake did well, providing a solid RPG that features great combat encounters and great character development. But perhaps most importantly, there is a clear love for the source material presented; everything has been reimagined in often shockingly impressive detail, and the main cast seem brilliantly realized without losing what made them so iconic in the first place.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth was faced with the absurdly complex task of capturing the story of Kazuma Kiryu and Ichiban Kasuga in one coherent campaign, and the RGG studio handled it all like water off a duck’s back. Divided into three open world maps, you’ll at times construct and upgrade two completely separate teams, each fighting on a different front. It’s a demand that most other studios wouldn’t be able to meet, but the Japanese team was all the better for it.
Combining all the turn-based combat and team management features, it’s exactly the story you’d expect from a Yakuza title: fascinating, twisted, unexpected, comical and amazing. With over 80 hours of content to invest in, including all the minigames and side stories, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the quintessential JRPG. It’s a best-in-class effort from RGG Studio and proves that the series is constantly on the rise, somehow getting better and better.

This may essentially be a political take on Persona, but since Atlus’ other IP is already so forceful, it would be foolish for Metaphor: ReFantazio not to take this basic structure and take it to recent heights. JRPGs take a slightly more simplistic approach to some things, such as a simpler archetype system and removing the need to equip specific monsters to strengthen interpersonal bonds. This allows you to better focus on combat and bonding with your teammates without fear of failure, turning Metaphor into a JRPG that allows for much more experimentation.
Throughout the 75-hour campaign, the number of players continues to grow, and the story is suspenseful from beginning to end. With the stunning visual style of the Atlus title, a great soundtrack, and a truly fantastic cast of characters, Metaphor: ReFantazio will deliver absolutely everything you could expect from a turn-based RPG in 2024. It is a subspecies at its peak.
