The answers for today’s Connections game, game #565, are…

  • YELLOW: BREAKFAST SIDES BACON, CASH, HASH, TAST
  • GREEN: PRESS AS A BUTTON CLICKS, STROKES, PRESSES, TAPS
  • BLUE: THEY HAVE A HORN AFRICA, BUGLER, CAR, UNICORN
  • PURPLE: ACTORS AWARDED WITH AN OSCAR BRIDGES, IRONS, PHOENIX, WASHINGTON

  • My rating: Moderate
  • My result: 1 error

My first thought when I saw PHOENIX and IRONS on the grid was the actors River and Jeremy. I spent ages trying to remember any movies they were in together (I later discovered there weren’t any, but they were both in a Shakespearean TV drama Empty Crown). Then I realized that they must be related to Denzil WASHINGTON and Kevin BACON and I managed to get rid of the dreaded “one”.

After combining the breakfast elements, I found the right group for BACON and the rest fell into place.

The blue group completely threw me off. While it is true that THEY HAVE A HORN, the type AFRICA has is very different from what you would find in a CAR. That’s the random beauty of Connections.

Yesterday’s NYT Connections Answers (Thursday, December 26, Game #564)

  • YELLOW: APPROXIMATELY AROUND, AS, Roughly
  • GREEN: TREES Black Elderberry, PALM, PINE, SPRUCE
  • BLUE: LARGE QUANTITY HANDSOME, HEALTHY, DEAR, PEACEFUL
  • PURPLE: ABBREVIATIONS US STATES, ACCORDING TO THE AP STYLE GUIDE ALA, ARKA, MISS, RED

What are NYT calls?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. The task is to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is straightforward, yellow is slightly more tough, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very tough.

The advantage is that you technically don’t have to solve the last one because you will be able to answer it by process of elimination. What’s more, you can make as many as four mistakes, which gives you some slack.

However, it’s a little more complicated than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to throw you into tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can unknown answers.

You can play it for free via NYT Gaming Site on your desktop computer or mobile phone.
