Arrowhead and Sony have released a recent update for Helldivers 2 that introduces the long-rumored third faction, the Illuminati. The update, titled Omens of Tyranny, also appears on city maps and on a jeep with a mounted cannon, which immediately reminds me of the Warthog from Halo and is hopefully just as fine and resilient. Here’s the trailer.
And here are some smoking bullet holes – I mean bullet points.
– Illuminati Faction: Inspired by classic sci-fi stories such as The War of the Worlds, the Illuminati pilot flying saucers and command armies of mind-controlled abductees called the “Voiceless” – so named by Super Earth because they have lost their influence on governed democracy.
– Fast Scout Vehicle: A recent Jeep-like car can be found in recent urban areas, and after completing a certain main order in the future, it will be available as a stratagem.
– Urban environment: Blocks of medium-sized concrete buildings provide recent roads on which you can drive your recent car if you can keep it upright.
The Illuminati have been on the horizon for so long that I’m honestly getting ill of them, but those honking giant tripods sure look terrifying.
It was way back in February this year when an in-game broadcast from Arrowhead suggested the return of Illuminate, and Super Earth stated that the rumors were simply the “work of dissidents.” Later guns added to the game used bow technology, which seemed like a subtle hint about the Illuminati floating around there. Let’s not forget about the Grand Order, which turned the planet into a black hole, ripe for alien activity. And then in September, players reported sightings of this faction on the Galactic War Map.
The Illuminati also appeared in the first game, equipped with Tesla rays, cloaking devices, and tripod mechs. They presented a different challenge for bugs and bots and the same applies here. It’s unclear whether they’ll be able to mind control the Helldivers, but I hope it’s possible.
