Onimusha Way Of The Sword is Capcom’s first recent action RPG in almost 20 years

Here’s something I didn’t expect: the recent Onimusha game. It’s called Onimusha Way Of The Sword, and it’s the first recent installment in Capcom’s samurai action horror franchise since… well, that upcoming VR game doesn’t count, and neither does the 2018 Warlords remaster. So 2012? Maybe 2006 if you exclude the Unity browser simulator? Cor.

If you’ve never played Onimusha and perhaps weren’t alive in 2006, it’s basically Resident Evil, but with a samurai and set in Japan. At least that was the case with the first one. Later parts took… some captivating liberties. For some reason, Jean Reno appeared in Onimusha 3. They have one thing in common: focusing more on combat than Resis. You don’t have to look for ammunition for your katana. But these are definitely not hack-and-slash games.

The Way Of The Sword trailer doesn’t reveal too much, but it does suggest a return to basics, which is to be expected from a series that hasn’t seen a main installment in almost two decades. The action appears to be set in feudal times, with a band of demons causing chaos in the forest. There are swordplay scenes, including some brutal finishes and dramatic parrying. If it’s already close to the formula, there should be some RPG elements.

Premiere in 2026. Any former Onimusha players here? I think I dropped out of the show around the time Jean Reno came on.
