Star Wars: Squadrons is the most underrated Star Wars video game to be released since Disney acquired Lucasfilm. You can buy it during the Steam sale for just $2. It’s also a great time to get it.

December is a month that I always associate with Star Wars. I have fond memories of buying games like these from 2005 Star Wars: Battlefront II Or Star Wars: The Force Unleashed spent Christmas as a child, and Disney usually released the latest Star Wars movies or TV shows on Disney+ in theaters that month. Right now, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew airs on Disney+ and is whimsical Goonie– the atmosphere resonates with me more than any Star Wars series since the first season The Mandalorian.

This put me in the mood to recommend you all check out a Star Wars game this holiday season, and I spotted this particularly good deal on Star Wars: Squadronsfighter fighting game published by Dead space creator of Motive and EA’s 2020 remake. I believe that of all the Star Wars console games that have been released since Disney acquired Lucasfilm, squadrons one of the most underrated. It usually costs $40 or is available through the EA Play subscription catalog for $6 per month. During this Steam Sale, you can permanently purchase the game at 95% off for just $2.

Starfighter fights have always been my favorite part of all the Star Wars media I watch. I have spent countless hours playing space battles Star Wars: Battlefront II and I am devastated that Lucasfilm failed to achieve this Rogue Squadron movie until the end. That’s why I was thrilled when EA revealed this information squadrons in 2020, positioning it as a pretty hardcore air combat game where players can control fighters in single-player and multiplayer battles. The campaign includes missions in which players control Imperial and New Republic pilots. This breakdown gives some insight into where both factions were at that point in the Star Wars timeline. I’d even go as far as to say it does a better job of presenting it concisely than many Disney+ Star Wars shows.

The real reason I liked it squadrons was his gameplay. Motive didn’t hold back and created an air combat game to challenge Ace Combat 7: Heavens Unknownplus a classic Star Wars: X-Wing AND Star Wars: TIE Fighter games that explored this concept in the 1990s. Ironically, Star Wars: Squadrons‘ discount of up to $2 makes it cheaper than the Steam versions Star Wars: The X-Wing Series right now. Like these retro titles, squadrons features first-person dogfights in which players engage in dogfights with other fighters.

Controlling these fighters takes some getting used to, as this isn’t a Star Wars-like game where players can just point and shoot. As a pilot, you must actively be aware of where you are allocating power in your fighter and slowly bring the enemy aircraft into line of sight to begin firing at them. It’s challenging to get your head around it at first, but learning how to properly maneuver your fighter and where to allocate power at certain times is a rewarding experience. Remember that it is better to play with a controller than with a mouse and keyboard.

EA

squadrons it fully captures the Star Wars pilot fantasy, and I appreciate that Motive didn’t sacrifice so much depth here to make it more accessible. If you want simpler space combat, you’d better play DICE’s Star Wars: Battlefront or Outlaws from Star Wars. squadrons is a game for those of us who have always wanted to know what it’s like to pilot an X-Wing or a TIE fighter. There is a solid single-player campaign and multiplayer modes for you to immerse yourself in squadrons. The PC version of the game even supports VR gameplay; I’ve never tried this because I don’t have a VR headset on PC, but it’s a nice little bonus that’s unique to this version squadrons.

It’s a shame it’s not as beloved as other newfangled Star Wars games Jedi from Star Wars: The fallen order. The hardcore nature of the combat and some shortcomings in keyboard and mouse controls were a bit off-putting for some. As a result, it ranks in the mid-range of mixed reviews on Steam; this game is much better than the rating suggests.

If you’ve ever, like me, loved the fantasy aspect of a star wars fighter pilot but haven’t played squadronsit’s really worth it, because during the Steam Winter Sale you can buy it for only $2. Sale ends at 10:00 AM PT on January 2, 2025.
