Quickly, the world is in danger, your adopted daughter is in danger, and the nearby inhabitants are terrorized by monsters. What are you doing? Ah, you’re sitting at a cozy table in a local tavern. You are playing a card game with a guy named “Aldert”. The wind howls and the ghosts of the night howl outside and you just sit there. Playing another “cow” card. All right.
I think you’ll be content to know that the creators of The Witcher 4 have more or less confirmed that Gwent will return in the recently unveiled sequel led by Ciri.
As he noticed Computer gamertwo developers from CD Projekt Red answered an interview question about the in-universe card game with some confidence, saying, “I don’t think anyone will be disappointed.”
“We really love this game,” executive producer Gosia Mitręga said in the video interview with Easy Allies. “And we also always listen carefully to the community that we love… But I don’t think anyone will be disappointed.”
“Yes, for sure,” added game director Sebastian Kalemba. “It’s part of the experience, absolutely. We also love Gwent.”
Perhaps reviving this card game for a sequel was an obvious idea, considering it was popular enough to spawn a free multiplayer spin-off and a standalone single-player adventure, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. Both games, as card games, were pretty solid.
Gwent, which originally appeared in The Witcher 3, was inspired by a physical card game Leaderwith a few differences in both graphics and rules to suit the world of cat-eyed freelancers and devious swamp witches. Meanwhile, the multiplayer version has changed its original appearance over the years to the point that every time I launch it, I have no idea how to best operate my cards. I’m curious what exact form this will take in The Witcher 4 and whether my winter tactic of covering the board with frost will be effective again.
