Rise of the Ronin lives up to Ubisoft’s old-fashioned open-world formula to a letter, but what gives it its charm is the setting. Feudal Japan is still an untapped period, and Team Ninja recreates it as best they can, documenting the clash of Eastern and Western cultures in multiple cities. The game itself and most of its side quests and activities are underwhelming, but there’s also some fun and intrigue if you just ride your horse through the wilderness to have a good browse around.

Despite false claims, this is the first open world Star Wars game ever made, one of the few truly good things about Star Wars Outlaws is the freedom it gives. The map uses the fog of war to hide its landmarks and secrets, which means you have to actually explore and complete side quests and discover items. It’s all delivered seamlessly, too, with no loading screens to interrupt the transition from the planet’s surface to space – even the latter is somewhat explorable. It’s a great foundation that doesn’t really get used in the campaign, but it has its advantage: Star Wars Outlaws is one of the best games for turning off your brain while playing and listening to a podcast.

We may be cheating a bit here, as it’s not completely seamless, but Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth’s huge, explorable zones deserve recognition for their variety and breadth of content. Even without the side stories cluttering up the numerous maps, the activities in Honolulu, Kamurohco, and Ijincho are pure fun. If you need a break from the main plot, the open world will happily host double-digit hours. The series has always been this way, but Infinite Wealth is its magnum opus (so far). If you want fun and hilarity in equal measure, look no further than the open world antics of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Plus you can ride a cold Segway.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is one of the few open world games released in 2024 that makes your adventures feel like a real adventure. While you may have an idea of where you want to go when you place a marker on the map, the space between it and your current position represents the true experience of Dragon’s Dogma 2. Capcom’s game is all about exploration and being as vigorous as possible, and random events make that traveling on ordinary roads is the ultimate experience. From goblin ambushes to warring trolls, you’ll regularly catch glimpses of fascinating sights and places that practically beg you to explore further. From the bodies of monsters to the bricks of castles, Dragon’s Dogma 2 represents the best of open world design.
