Sonic the Hedgehog filmmakers reveal the huge cat scene that almost happened

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hit theaters last weekend and so far we’re having a lot of fun with it. Amidst the joy of learning that there is a fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie and learning that the ending of the movie teases another fresh Sonic character in the movie, everyone is still wondering one main question: where is Big the Cat?

Sure, it may not be the most burning question of all time, but we had the chance to chat with Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy authors Pat Casey and Josh Miller to ask where everyone’s favorite fisherman kitty has been all this time. And it turns out they actually wrote a cameo for Big the Cat in the second Sonic the Hedgehog movie… only for it to be a little too grim to make it into the final cut.

“In one version of Sonic 2, when they were going through the snowy mountains to the cave, we had a little bit of that because Sonic 2 was kind of like Indiana Jones,” Casey told us. “Indiana Jones, it’s a trope that at some point a skeleton jumps out at you and scares you. So we wanted to do this, but I’d say with a skeleton: AND Big Cat, not necessarily…

Miller interjects at this point: “Not necessarily the Big Cat.”

But we finally cut it out,” Casey concludes. “It didn’t make any sense.”

Sadly, we almost had… a dead Big Cat in Sonic 2. Both writers said that “Big Cat” is usually their joking response when fans ask them who they want to add to the movies, although they also told me they’ve been trying to get them for three movies without success. Rogue the Bat.

Stay tuned to IGN for the full interview with Casey and Miller later this week, as well as the latest news on the Sonic the Hedgehog movies.
