Rayman appears in a weird NFT game, somewhat inspired by the coolest Far Cry DLC that Ubisoft just quietly released because of course it is

Ubisoft has done it again. Here’s a weird novel NFT game that was released by a publisher with zero fanfare. This game features Rayman and is based on something inspired by the hilarious Blood Dragon expansion for Far Cry 3, if you can believe it.

As you may know, this isn’t the first time Ubisoft has dropped the oddball NFT/Web3 game in an almost cautious way this year – it was Master Tactics: The Grimoria Chronicles at the end of October. The name probably doesn’t mean anything to you, but you may remember it as a game that had a bug that caused one or two players to play and win every match they played until they got banned, patched, and then a rather awkward unban.

Enter Captain Laserhawk: The GAME, which was released earlier this week with virtually no marketing, probably because, as Stephen Totilo of Game file reports, contains a lot of cryptocurrency and blockchain related shit, and even requires an NFT to play.

But here’s where things get weird. This game is based on a Netflix animated series called Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, which itself draws inspiration from Far Cry: Blood Dragon, a really good expansion – or a standalone mini-game based on, depending on your point of view – for Far Cry 3.

You remember the Blood Dragon, right? It was a fun twist on island adventures with Vaas, reminiscent of an ’80s action movie, allowing you to play as a military cyborg named Sergeant Rex “Power” Colt, voiced by “Alien” and “Terminator” actor Michael Biehn.

Either way, judging by what Totilo says, the whole NFT thing isn’t all that fun. Instead, it’s said to be an early access game that’s “the simplest top-down shooter imaginable,” allowing PC users to shoot around while bumping into characters from the Netflix series and Rayman, who guest stars in it for a reason .

“Rayman is the shining face of the entire Eden media system, from the Eden Report to the Eden Late Show, including all entertainment programs,” reads the description of the Ubisoft mascot character on the website Captain Laserhawk: Game website.

“In his earlier life, Rayman was an inhabitant of a universe called Dimension X. As an immigrant to this reality, Rayman witnessed many injustices in America and struggled to overcome rejection from everyone he encountered. He was elated to see America fall – and even happier that Eden had given him purpose. Since he is Eden’s chief propaganda specialist, Rayman’s genial image is apparent everywhere. While Rayman’s likeness has a huge impact, Rayman is simply a cog in the Eden machine.

Wait a minute, did Ubisoft turn Rayman into a Die Hard villain you actually want to side with halfway through the movie? Maybe, but I’m not playing some NFT bullshit to find out.
