WITH Sonic the Hedgehog 3Sega’s live-action adaptation of the fast-paced platformer is entering a fresh era. With each subsequent film, the so-called Sound films sought to abandon the overall “family” film image in favor of a more straightforward approach to anime-inspired twists on the long-running platformer series. And this latest film was a success. Sonic 3 is a loose adaptation of one of the most beloved stories in the series’ 30-year run. While the film makes some changes, it doesn’t shy away from the otherworldly, energy-charged melodrama that stood out Sound from contemporaries from the beginning of the 21st century. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 still falls into the trap of demeaning viewers of all ages with jokes and honestly groan-worthy bits, but more than ever the third film earns the right to delve into the video game overload that made these characters so beloved in the first place.
Although there are a few shortcomings in the assessment, Sonic 3The show’s greatest strength is that it prioritizes its non-human characters, rather than pushing them to the side in the service of less captivating humans. After a colossal disappointment Knuckles a series story focused on a human beingI was relieved when I saw this Sonic 3 not only do they focus on anthropomorphic aliens, but they also give them some of the best material they’ve created to date. The heart of the film is Keanu Reeves’ The Shadow. Although his story is slightly different from the games, the same lines of regret and revenge flow through him. Reeves’ performance in Shadow Generations related DLC was scratchy, but his soulful delivery in the film carries the weight of Shadow Bears in some of the darkest stories movies have ever told.
Although the specification is slightly different, Sonic 3 draws largely from the perspective of a character fighting in the game, from which it draws the most, Sonic Adventure 2. The film uses most of the game’s key elements, effectively dividing it into two tones depending on which speedy hedgehog is at the center of which scene. Shadow’s spotlight moments are as contemplative and evocative as those in his Dreamcast debut two decades ago. Meanwhile, the scenes with Sonic are cheerful and positive, and the unease of Shadow’s darker history shines through as the film tries to explore both characters’ reactions to loss.
A clear duality Sonic 3 the cracks between Sonic and Shadow make the film a more intentional video game adaptation than previous films. More than just introducing renowned characters and stories, Sonic 3 actively adjusts structure and symmetry Sonic Adventure 2 with great effect. Although unfortunately the film is missing a key character as Rouge the Bat does not appear in it Sonic 3 as some have speculated, the asymmetry between Sonic and Shadow, even if they appear to have the same strength and ability, is the clearest sign of a directorial intent that was previously too vague. Sonic 3 removes most of the cheesy distractions from previous films such as Sonic 2the wedding plot or the nonsensical pop culture references that plague these films. Instead, the film is clearly aiming for something that will be faithful to the source material and not always be degrading to the children in the room. Surprisingly, the film is one of the most poignant explorations of Sonic and Shadow’s contrast, coming after years of treating Shadow like a bit player. He respects his characters enough not to dilute their darkest sides. At least that’s the case with the main characters.
Even though I loved Sonic and Shadow’s rivalry, I didn’t expect to get out of it Sonic 3 Jim Carrey’s sour performance as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik. Carrey plays dual roles in the film, reprising his role as the eccentric mad scientist and Eggman’s grandfather, Gerald Robotnik. Gerald played an essential but mostly posthumous role throughout the story Sound series, and I was wary of Carrey’s portrayal of him in the trailers, as the film seemed to take a more funny approach to a character known for some of his most spine-chilling moments in the franchise. Gerald is alive and well(?). Sonic 3and gives Carrey the opportunity to mostly riff with himself. While both characters have their moments, most of these films’ greatest sins can be seen when the Workers appear on screen. In these moments, you’ll find the needle drop, the unexpected dance break, and all the unfunny bits that come off like an adult writing for kids they don’t think can grasp anything even remotely sophisticated. Almost all of this falls on Carrey’s screen time and seems like a waste of his talents and the mad scientists he plays.

Paramount’s over-reliance on human characters was one of the show’s most glaring problems Sound movies. Talented actors playing Sonic’s human friends were often given the worst material in the script, making even the shortest scenes feel excruciatingly long. Sonic 3 he is not innocent because Jessica Jones actor Krysten Ritter joins the cast as GUN agent Principal Rockwell, who mostly exists as a transient obstacle to everyone before being quickly removed from the picture. The Knuckles the series might as well not have been named that, since Idris Elba barely played the beloved Echnida in the series. For two movies, I felt like Carrey was Carrey’s crazy, show-stealing performance while Eggman was immune to it, but otherwise the movie does such a good job of focusing on Sonic and Shadow that these distracting tendencies into effortless translation to his performance instead of elsewhere.
The best human interactions in Sonic 3 are the ones that return to two main storylines, such as Alyla Browne’s role as Shadow’s best friend, Maria, or Sonic’s father/son relationship with James Marsden’s small-town cop, Tom. Lee Majdoub also gives a stern performance, reprising his role as Agent Stone struggling with a toxic relationship with senior Egghead. But most of the work of distracting kids from their crazy antics falls to Carrey. This robs him of the wit and comedic timing he had in the first two films. I’m sure he had a great time on set, but he deserved better than what he had to work with.

Some of this friction occurs only because Gerald lives in this version of the story, and that is not the only difference, even the most informally involved Sound the fan will notice it. There are a few key changes to individual games and movies that longtime fans will notice, but overall Sonic 3 does everything in its power to retain the AMV bait-and-switch feel of an early 21st century series, and manages to create something that is consistently entertaining, above all respectful of the characters and viewers, and as true to the spirit of the series as possible. Watching Sonic and Shadow collide with a focus and style that feels even more electrifying than anything the first two films attempted is great fun, and the final battle is especially raw, emotionally cathartic and well-deserved after three good, gradually improved films and bad TV show.
I think “earned” is the word I keep wandering to when I think about it Sonic 3. These films have come a long way since Paramount first revealed them terrifying gremlin it was Poor Sonic in the first trailer from then, he tried to delete data from the Internet. Each movie gradually tried to introduce more of the weird, stern nonsense that kept Sonic and Shadow in the hearts of millions, even as the series ran into problems that would end most other major franchises. If you had told me 20 years ago that it was a live-action adaptation Sonic Adventure 2 If it made it to the gigantic screen one day, I don’t think I would believe you. If you had told me it would be fine, I would have believed you even less.
